dahlgren
« on: January 04, 2009, 07:19:47 PM »
Hi,

I am from Belgium and new here although i have been reading alot here.
I use to make steam engines and fire eaters and so on.
I am metalworker since almost 30 years and have acces to mills and lathe's at work.
Now i want to make a Dahlgren naval cannon, golf ball size or 1" bore, therefore i want to ask here if anyone can send me plans for a cannon like this.
I looked all over internet but could not find any detailed plans.I am familiar with guns and shooting since i am a member at a local club and owned a caliber 50(commercial)cannon before.
Happy new-year,

Kind regards,

Andre

Welcome to the Blackpowder Mortar and Cannon board, barebower.  Sounds like you have the experience and the equipment available to make a very nice Dahlgren naval gun.  You can also make a very accurate scale model too if you order at set of plans like we did of the
IX Inch Dahlgren Shell Gun.  Antique Ordnance Publishers is an excellent supplier of accurate dimensioned drawings of a large variety of cannons.  Their contact information and pricing is listed under the "Plans" heading under the last listing in the Highlighted Section at the top of the opening page of this board.  Look for GBO Sponsor & Internet Blackpowder Cannons related links.  Publication # 50 is the one which has dimensioned tube drawings and also dimensioned drawings of the 1859 Wooden Marsilly Carriage and the 1865 Wrought Iron Carriage (also a Marsilly style carriage).  Please keep us informed of your progress on this interesting project.

Regards,

Mike and Tracy

Smokin' my pipe on the mountings, sniffin' the mornin'-cool,
I walks in my old brown gaiters along o' my old brown mule,
With seventy gunners be'ind me, an' never a beggar forgets

Do you know exactly which Dahlgren naval model you want?  There are many, from boat howitzers to 20-inch cast-iron monsters.  The more specific you are in your request, the quicker you will find what you want if anyone has it.  All of his large-bore shipboard guns are not the same profile, although they look similar from a distance.

Thank you all for your nice answers.
I have already some scale drawings of a 9" long scale model of a dahlgren on a navy marsilly carriage.
This seems a nice project to begin with.
I will keep you updated once i started to lathe the barrel.
