36gr Barnes Varmint Grenade 22-250 loads
« on: January 13, 2009, 02:30:40 AM »
I'm having a hard time trying to find load data for the grenades.  I have a model 70 sporter varmint.  I think the twist is likely 1-12.  The powder I have on hand are imr 4320, 4895 and H380.  If anyone has any loads that they are willing to share, that would be great.  I am also going to load some 52gr speer boat tail match bullets, so if anyone has any pet loads for these I would be grateful for the info.
Thanks,
Good Hunting,
Swamp

I suggest you contact Barnes directly and get your data from them. I'm not familiar with that specific bullet but if one of their all copper bullets they tend to run somewhat higher pressures than cup and core jacketed bullets. H380 should be the correct powder for it and using data for 45 grain cup and core likely would be safe but contacting the manufacturer for data is always the proper way to get it. Trusting the internet for loading data can get you in trouble.

Check the Barnes website. They have load data for the varmint grenade in the 22-250 and other calibers posted there.

I was on the Barnes website and they only give two loads for the 36 in 22-250.  I guess I will have to contact them.
Thanks,

When I contacted Barnes with the same question. They told me use data for 40 grain uncoated bullets, and work up like usual.

I agree that H380 would be a good choice of powder, but Barnes lists a tested load for IMR 4320 for that round in you 22-250. (see below) I have also listed a few others.

The new Barnes manual lists the following for the 36 - grain VG

Win 748  Min 36.0 Max 40.0 Load Density 88%
BL-C(2)   Min 37.0 Max 40.5 Load Density 88% (Listed as Most Accurate)
H335       Min 33.5 Max 37.5 Load Density 80%
TAC         Min 34.5 Max 38.5 Load Density 84%
Varget      Min 36.5 Max 40.0 Load Density 98%
IMR 4320  Min 35.5 Max 39.5 Load Density 95%
RL 15       Min 36.0 Max 40.0 Load Density 98%

Good luck and be safe!

I'll try the 4320, although I wanted to use the H380 as the 4320 came with the barreled action and looks a little old.
Thanks,
