contender 44 mag load help

I tried some new loads for my 44 contender today 20grs 296 250gr keith style bullets mag primers. Recoil was ok but cases were very sticky and black. still trying understand why have been shooting 240xtp with 23.0grs same primers no problem. thanks for any help.

Blk sooty cases generally mean a bad seal at the brass due to lo pressures...

 296 is not the best choice of powders for mid velocity lead loads. It doesn't like to be loaded down, I say pick a more appropriate powder, like Unique.

1+ on the unique I use it as well. Lil gun may be good as well, never switched from unique when it came out.

If those bullets are a plain base, you might try switching to 4227. Just a tad bit faster burning powder than 296, but cooler burning. Less chance of leading. I prefer 296, but I gas check most of my bullets.  gypsyman

Don't Forget about 2400 and STD. primers.
