Now the one thing I might take exception with on my new Hawkeye is, the caution/instructions in the owners manual, NOT TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE BARREL BEDDING.
Well, I know the factory would have something to hit me with, IF I were to send the rifle back because of some grouping issue, but-----------------.
Other then MY CLARK CUSTOM 77/22 which shoots so very well just as it came from Clark, I don't do contact bedded barrels on my hunting rifles.
Frankly the 77/22 shoots so well, I am afraid to touch it. If, I were to put an after market stock on that rifle, I probably would float the barrel, knowing I might need to fully bed it at some point.
I even devised a way to float my RUGER #1s and they shoot great.
So, in spite of the instructions, I have floated my Hawkeye and was really surprised at the amount of upward pressure the synthic stock applied to the barrel.
Now possibly the synthic stock is ridged enough to prevent upward pressure AND changes in hand/rest position from changing point of impact.
But personally, I am not willing to chance it, as consistancy in point of impact is highly important to me.
I can see RUGER's point, but I am too old and been there and done that enough that I am willing to take the chance.
Keep em coming!
