Are Ruger Hawkeyes worth a hoot ?
« on: January 19, 2009, 07:27:55 AM »
Bought one last Oct but have yet to shoot it. Was putting a scope on it and discovered the stock was split about 3 places near the pistol grip also the bolt was so hard to lift, I really couldn"t do it, especially with the rifle to the shoulder. So it's back to
ruger and 6 more weeks before I can try it. I bought a .308 as sort of an all rounder. I reload and have some experience with a .308 in the field.  Really  like the stock configuration for fit.

Call Ruger and let them know.
They will have you ship it to them and they will take care of it.

I've noticed that most of the time Ruger takes good care of their customers.

Morn'in shooters,

Just IMHO, but yes, they are just fine, in fact, very good.

The Hawkeye I presently have is stainless w/synthic stock and was bought to replace a Browning A-bolt.

The A-bolt had a barrel which looked like it had been rifled with a tap. Meaning the machine marks were clearly visable in the extreme..

I even firelapped that barrel about 20 rounds, and was afraid to go any more.

Anyway, dumped that unit and replaced it with another RUGER to join the rest of the RUGERS I already have.

Now the bolt is not as smooth as the operation of the Browning. I had never had an action that smooth, but the important thing, the barrel on the RUGER is everything the Browning wasn't.

It is as smooth as the proverbial babies butt or the china door knob - take your choice - and shoots very well. Something where the Browning was Ify at best.

I really like the feel of the stock and the molded checkering is very easy to hang on to.

In short, the Hawkeye is a KEEPER!

Keep em coming!

Much to my suprise I called Ruger yesterday and my rifle was here this morning ! It now has a solid stockand the bolt operates much smoother. However, the bbl is Not free floated like the other two Hawkeyes I had  suppose they did this was on purpose ? (they told me they would shoot it to make sure it was in accuracy specs) I put a 3x9 Nikon prostaff on it this afternoon. Now if this Missouri weather clears it's off to the range.

Now the one thing I might take exception with on my new Hawkeye is, the caution/instructions in the owners manual, NOT TO MAKE ANY CHANGES TO THE BARREL BEDDING.

Well, I know the factory would have something to hit me with, IF I were to send the rifle back because of some grouping issue, but-----------------.

Other then MY CLARK CUSTOM 77/22 which shoots so very well just as it came from Clark, I don't do contact bedded barrels on my hunting rifles.

Frankly the 77/22 shoots so well, I am afraid to touch it.  If, I were to put an after market stock on that rifle, I probably would float the barrel, knowing I might need to fully bed it at some point.

I even devised a way to float my RUGER #1s and they shoot great.

So, in spite of the instructions, I have floated my Hawkeye and was really surprised at the amount of upward pressure the synthic stock applied to the barrel.

Now possibly the synthic stock is ridged enough to prevent upward pressure AND changes in hand/rest position from changing point of impact.

But personally, I am not willing to chance it, as consistancy in point of impact is highly important to me.

I can see RUGER's point, but I am too old and been there and done that enough that I am willing to take the chance.

Keep em coming!

I sent mine back. When I got it a few days ago I noticed it WAS NOT free floated . The hawkeye is supposed to be, then on the repair order they had put 3 major parts in the bolt. Got me wondering if it was a good rifle or not. I haven"t shot it yet. I droped by a local gun shop and spotted a Browning short trac that someone put in lay a way, boy is it ugly but it fits like a glove ! only weighs 6.5 lbs and a guy in the shop said his shot better than an auto has any right to. So, I traded in the Hawkeye ! Hope my wife doesn"t find out !  ;D
