my first choice M1 Garand or M1 Carbine?

I'm sorry to say the M1 carbine gets my vote no funky clip to chase after and the .30 carbine ammo is cheaper its definitely my next purchase brand new made in the usa $389. The garand was a fine war weapon but i like the M14 better I still would like to have all three someday.

Hay BigBill:  Git yorself onna dem carbines - they are too much fun not to have one.  You are correct, ammo is fairly inexpensive and you don't have to chase the 'clips'.

My sister bought one a couple of years ago at a gun show in Saratoga.  She saw it first and put a down payment on it before she even asked me about it - she like it for the size and weight.  The darn thing even came with the sight and sight attachment for the grenade launcher, and all for $325.  She skips cans with it at 50 yds.  I'm happy.  

Hope all is well and that Christmas was good for you.  You must have gotten the same snowstorm we did.  How did you fare???  Mikey.

Mikey I have the best snowplow a '55 CJ-5 4cly. just a frame, 4 sets of chains and a seat with a four way plow its funny looking but i don't have to shovel it only cost me $400 and she(christine) always runs. I always shoveled snow for hours here in the past and in '78 for 8 hours to do the driveway. We are still going to get more yet it ain't over boy it was comming down for a while I heard last year Albany got 4-6" an hour? like 7' of snow in one storm we are over do for a normal winter. I can't wait to go fishing again.

I think the M1 Carbine is a great affordable buy the ammo is cheap it also has a match grade barrel that shoots 2" to 2 1/2" groups at 100yds. i have to save for it I'm almost there already.          BigBill

Absolutely no question whatsoever: the M-1 Carbine first.

1.   Sure it is a small gun with a small cartridge, but a small gun that is quickly available at your home and in your hands is better than a Boat Oar that is stuffed under your bed, never handy, and shoots an elk round.

2.   People (I always hear that they are veterans) bemoan the fact that the m-1 carbine round is so weak, that it would not reliably down charging enemy troops with a single shot (as would the Garand).  On the other hand, however, remember this:

         In battle, they were all shooting full metal jacket ammo.  Using modern factory ammo with a hollow point bullet in th Carbine is a whole different animal.

         At 100 yards, the m-1 carbine has as much foot pounds of energy as a 44 mag handgun cartridge has at the muzzle!!!   900 ft pounds..
Anybody out there volunteering to stand in front of a hollow point?

         I may be wrong, but I think that at 200 yards, it still has 500 ft pounds of energy, i.e., the power of a .357 mag handgun at the muzzle.

3.   The Carbine is easily mastered by women and children.  They like em and can shoot them well.

4.   The Garand is an ultimate "offensive" weapon, and if we were required to "capture a hill" or "take out a bunker" then it would obviously be the first choice.  But guess what, we are never going to use a rifle for that purpose.  The practical use in this country is always for defensive purposes.  And for defense, the Carbine wins hands down  (and remember you can get a 30 shot clip!)

This is a great little overlooked WW2 gun I think so any way. The ammo costs only $7.95 a box of 50/  1,000rds for $155 of .30 cal. 110gr. FMJ not bad for plinkin its right there with other guns that are affiordable to buy/shoot.                                         BigBill

My problem is I never seen a surplus military gun I didn't like or want to own I just like them all. So far all of them have been fun to shoot. We just need to get this M1 Carbine of the shadows of the Garand and give it the fame that it deserves too. They all have their place I just think the M1 is overlooked.                                                BigBill

love mine !!!!! looks like heck, all dinged up, scratched , beat up... and just poorly looking... but hoo boy !! does she shoot !!!
