45acp vs 45gap vs 9mm vs 40S&W
« on: January 24, 2009, 11:56:04 AM »
OK, so, I just read about the 45gap today.  Never heard of it till I was runnin' down the pistols on Bud's website today.
I read what Wikkipedia had to say...What do you all have to say about it.
Can you shoot these from a 45acp revolver?
Are they hard to reload...is there data out for them?

Any/all comments on this...please feel free to jump in.  I only own a Buckmark, but desire to get into a center fire  revolver or semi in the future, for CC/HD.

The 45 GAP is a slightly lighter weight 45 acp.  It can be fired throughany 45 acp chambered revolver using half moon or full moon clips.  I believe they can be reloaded using 45 ACP dies.

If you are looking for a 45 acp for carry purposes, Kimber has a nice new, lightweight Commander length and the S&W 1911SD is lookin' better 'n better to me every day.

If you are looking for a nightstand revolver like the new S&W Nightguards, one of those comes in 45 acp but, anything that can be done with the GAP can be done better with the ACP.  JMTCW.   Mikey.

The purpose behind the 'Gap' was to be able to put the .45 in a 9mm sized semi-automatic.  As Glock does it, there is no advantage to it as the grip is large anyway.  It could be of use to people with small hands if a 'downsized' 1911 were made.  I have seen a couple of prototypes, but I don't know if any are in production.  As to the 9mm against the .45, that horse has pretty well been beaten to death.  Yes, a 9mm is good with the right bullets, but with the same bullets, the .45 is still better.  The .40 S&W is again, an attempt to get .45 power in a 9mm sized handgun.  You have a cartridge loaded to much higher pressures, and a lot more 'buck and roar' to get the same ballistics as the .45.  And now it is being down loaded with 165 gr bullets rather than the original 180's to make it more comfortable to shoot (and loosing the .45 ballistics in the process).  Enough said, just go get yourself a nice .45, you will love it!  44 Man

45 ACP all the way. The 45 GAP is the answer to a non-exisistant problem. The 9mm is ok with good bullets. The 40 S&W is a comprimise between the two. Get yourself a 45 ACP and you're good to go. :)

+1  What he said.

Also, the 9mm got a bad rep from wars because it used fmj bullets.  If you handload you can get hollow points that change the performance of a 9mm.  I have a 9mm because it's something my wife can handle too.  If I wasn't married I'd still have my xd 45 ACP.  I really don't see the point in buying a 45GAP.

I'd like to see a double action convertible revolver with cylinders for 45acp & 45lc.I have a Ruger BH convertible with 45acp & 45lc cylinders. The colt cartridge is a great manstopper according to  police officers who had seen  it used on felons fleeing in cars, the round went thru the trunk lid, backseat, front seat & dislocated the perps shoulder then ended up in the firewall,in another case angling shot went thru the front door, seat and dislocated the hip of a fleeing felon in both cases the flight was halted & both survived to stand trial.I'm a 45acp fan, most of the officers I worked with carried 1911's cocked and locked.
