I
Quote
When he comes across a coyote after being dispatched by the city, he closely observes its behavior until he has judged whether it is aggressive. Those he deems a threat to humans or pets he shoots with one of his .22-caliber guns.

I am very happy for you handi owners but this is not really the right attitude as the Coyote is an opportunist pure and simple. If we were to claim that one is not aggressive, that Coyote will soon be into food bowls left out for the pets, then the pets themselves, and on to small children or even adults. At the very least the home owners should yell at those Coyotes or even throw rocks at them to let them know that they are not wanted. Preferably, our man with his handi should wack one at every opportunity. This will turn the opportunist back into a very wary predator that will learn to avoid the home dwellings. Our man is certainly not going to kill them all. It is reconed that nothing but an atomic blast could do that.

To summerize...I would kind of expect that our handi owner knows this. He may be very shrewd and have decided to tell the (possible Liberal media) that there is very friendly and nice Coyotes and also some very Aggressive and mean ones. The Media ends up happy, the neighboorhood happy, and our man goes hunting!. If So, I Applaud Him For This.

I am not qualified to discuss, nor particularly concerned about, how the determination is made, or the methodology of "official" coyote dispatching in Denver, or any other city. Just thought it was cool to find a picture of a working man's Handi in the NYTimes...  ;D

I figured this guy could probably bring whatever coyote dispatching tools there might be on the market to his job, and in this case, he chose a Handi.

I would have done it for $60.  ::)

Seriously,
If it wasn't for the tree hugging liberal hippies the American population is turning into there wouldn't be a coyote problem in Denver.  The Coyotes where I'm from still fear humans.  I rarely see them.  The last one I did see met an untimely end.

If I would have stuck with the intent of your post I would have said Hurray For The Handi!!!....We all know that they are more than capable for the task of P-Dogs to Coyotes. I do not own one myself but there is a possibility that IL may join the ranks of Ohio or Indiana where the pistol calibers only are legal for deer hunting in a rifle. If this were to happen, the Handi would be my first choice.

+1 on that here. Those Coyotes just dont mean to be seen for the most part and they can be very good at it. Occasionally, but not too often, I will get caught out in the full dark on an evening hunt without any night hunting accessories.
On one such hunt I was in the wide open lying prone in the frozen corn stubble when I had coaxed an entire pack from perhaps 1 mile away down to 300yds when it turned full dark. I had shut up (read quit calling) and had been peering intently for the silly-wets or movement just prior to this but it was a no go on spotting one with any shooting light left. This was quite exciting because the group was very vocal. It sounded like there was 15 or more but in reality, there was probably just six to eight of them. So Here I Was, Laying Out In The Full Open, Pitch Black River Bottoms Due To Cloud Cover, Three Rounds In The Bolt Action, Not Even A Flashlight, And I Could Hear Those Yotes Hitting The Frozen Stalks As Close As 100yds Away As They Came To Eat Me Alive.
Reality...I was just scared that this group would get behind me and catch my scent which may educate them or make them call wise to any future hunts. As it turned out, the group made a hard left when they were within 100yds or closer and I knew that there was a draw in that direction that they would hunt out. At no time was I worried about my personnal safety though because these yotes know that human scent or dwellings = bad news for them.

Mr. Moderator, Please Excuse Me. No more hunting storys in a forum for rifle discussion. I promise.. :-\...yes, I really do promise!. It is just that sometimes (ok, a lot of times) I live & breath Coyotes and their behavior & Coyote hunting.

It's a great story and an excellent tribute to the Handy Rifle, but why in the heck did the author have to place in the title, Gun-Wielding Trapper? Why couldn't he have just called the man a Trapper with a Rifle, or something else that wouldn't have made the hero of the story sound so sinister. But an excellent story none the less. I'm happy for you Handy lovers out there.

In newspapers the author rarely writes his/her own headline. (I worked in newspapers in the olden days) Headlines are done specifically by a "headline writer". The purpose of headlines is to attract attention, nothing else.

So, that being said, I'm gonna go out on a limb (not!) and say that your average "headline writer" at the NYT is pretty much guaranteed to write something with an anti-gun flavor like "Gun-Wielding Trapper" rather than "Trapper with a Rifle". In fact if the headline writer had been a PETA member, it coulda been a lot more attention getting ... e.g."Crazed Ball-Cap Wearing Redneck with High-Powered Sniper Rifle Decimates Denver's Wild Pups" or "Denver Suburbanites Hire Sniper. Targets: Helpless Wild Dogs."

Tally,

I didn't know that info about headline writers. Thanks for sharing that. Your explanation makes it very clear how the trapper became a Gun Wielder. Those other headline possibilities that you mentioned are on the surface hilarious, but oh so true when we get right down to crux of the matter.
