Contender Carbine cut down to super 16?
« on: January 17, 2009, 08:23:27 PM »
I am having problems finding a super 16 in a .44 and .357 and 7-30 waters. I was thinking of picking up a carbine barrel and having it cut to a super 16(16.25) I want to use it as a handgun and a carbine.

Has anyone done this? if so did it hurt the accuracy?

Any suggestions on a Smith that does it?

  Thanks

Lonny

Yep, I've done it with a 30-30. didn't hurt the barrels accuracy at all.  Super 16 barrels contour is the exact same as the 21" carbine, so it winds up looking the same.  The 16.25" and 21" are both getting scarce with the 16.25's seeming to be the worst.  Walt  :(

A few years ago I decided to cut one of my own barrels myself.  I have a Marlin 1894 lever acition in 41. mag that was 20" and is now 16 1/4" and  shoots great.  I studied a forum thread that suggested marking around the barrel with a strip of masking tape at the desired length.  Next i put a cutoff wheel in my drimmel tool and whacked it off.  I used a couple of files to round the outer edge nicely.  For the crown I put a carridge bolt in my hand drill chuck and applied lapping compound to the bolt head and polished away.  After a few minutes with the drill I used some cold bluing and it looks good for a first time effort and shoots fine.  I have plans to convert a couple of bargan priced rifle barrels to pistol barrels for my TC.
