kansas whitetail with g2 30/30
« on: December 28, 2008, 05:47:16 PM »
well folks I figured out how to post pics ( I hope)so here is one of my deer.

it was an 87 yard shot (lasered) he was walking away from me.  I hit hit behind the ribs on the right and the bullet went through at least one of the lungs and the heart then lodged in the left front shoulder.  here is a pic of the bullet

the bullet was one of the hornady leverlution 160 grain rounds.  when I hit him he rolled then took one step then that was it.  he dressed out around 200 lbs.  once again the old 30/30 does the deed.

btw when I switched to the hornady round my point of aim was 3 inches higher.  there is some more power in that round that is for sure.

its a factory 23" barrel.  And no I have not crono'ed it I don't have one. all I know is that it has more thump on the shoulder than the 170's I was shooting before.  I wish hornady would bring out the powder they use and sell the leverloution bullets they are hard to find on the shelf sometimes.

Chock up another one for the good ol' thurty-thruty.
Hornady has final come out with these flex-tips for us reloaders. Got some on order.

cool
Isnt the contender carbine the sweetest little rifle?
I thought that I had heard somewhere that the 30-30 wouldnt kill "modern" deer. Doesnt it take a magnum? ;)
Thank you for posting your picture and story, you done good.

Carl, that is a great buck even by KS standards.

BTW, Horn. is selling the bullets for 09.

Sorry, I guess you meant the loaded ammo, there would be no need to reload them for a single shot, you could just load any pointed. This proves it's getting late, I'm going to bed now!!

Very nice buck, and a great display of the bullet.  Are you a Hornady salesman :D

nomosendero,

I do intend to use the same bullet even for the single shot.  I think it is very well designed for the 30/30 and I think it would be hard to match its performance.  its kinda like the old saying don't fix it if its not broken.  I just want to save money if I can make them myself.  as for being a hornaday salesman I wish I could find someone to pay me to hunt.   ;D.

Carl,   Nice deer ! How do you like your rifle and what kind of accuracy do you get ? I've thought about getting a G-2 for a while now. I just need a little push.  ;D   Dave

Dave,

well my 204 Ruger barrel (factory) shoots well under and inch at 100 yards,  when i do my part I have shot 5 shot cloverleafs.  the 30/30 barrel (factory) is also under and inch I have had several 1/2 groups with the leverloution and I don't shoot as much as I would like to.  I must admit the only reason my rem 700 30.06 comes out of the gun safe is cause I have not picked up my 375 JDJ barrel yet and need it for elk.  when I do it is going to get lonely in the gun safe.  I hunt washington state most of the time and a 5 1/2 rifle that shots that well is hard to put down.

Thanks for the reply. I've thought about getting one for deer and I don't think you can do much better than a 30-30 in a light and versitile(and apparently accurate) platform. Of course I'd have to add a 223 barrel too. Let us know how the 375 JDJ barrel does when you get it. Now all I got to do is convince the Ole Lady that I need another rifle.  :-[      Dave
