.308 to 6.5 creedmoor
« on: January 10, 2009, 01:56:26 PM »
I have a handi rifle in.308 and am interested in the new hornady 6.5 creedmoor cartridge. I know the cartridge is based on the .308 case so would it be possible to convert my .308 barrel to the 6.5 creed moor? If so, what would i have to have done and what would be a ball park figure for the work?

No you can't do that one, the creedmore is a 6.5mm the .308 is a 7.62mm you can go up but you can't go down on bullet size.

I would start with 24'' 223 bull barrel and rebore and chamber for the 6.5 creedmore.

Cost will be in the neighborhood of $300 for a rebore as there is no 6.5mm bore barrel made by H&R, you could also have a stub done(see FAQs and help sticky) but the will cost about the same.

Wayne at Oregunsmithing will do rebores or stubs, he's done both for me, lots of rebores for members here.  ;)

He did my 6.5x55 from the experimental 300WSM stub and a 6.5 Shilen match barrel, you can barely see the line where the two are mated about 1/8" back from the forend.

No, ya didn't miss it, haven't made it out there yet, with the weather the way it's been and the range only open on Sundays since now, I'll need a "convergence" as Patrick McManus calls it!!  :-\

Tim, I am frustrated.  Can't drag out the bench rest, spotting scope, ammo, ear goodies,  snow blow a trail to the shooting  bench, snow blow a trail to the target, Clear the snow off the shooting bench.  Go inside the house, drink lots of hot coffee and or something else.  Come back out, set up, breathe on the scope, wait til it clears.  Now feet are cold, go in, put on dry socks and boots.  Check the thermometer....oh, not too bad...3 above.  Wind? hell, it's only 21 knots......across the range.  Spotting scope fogged.  Hand stuck to frame.  Beer froze.  When does April happen???? ??? ???

Oh, yeah, hot barrels are not a problem.

I'm lucky then, just have to deal with rain, unfortunately I want the chrono set up for load work and it can't be used in the rain.  :-\ I thought about trying to waterproof it, but I think anything I do to protect the sensors would also compromise readings. ???

I think you're right on the chrono.  Mine's going to sit on the shelf until spring.  Then, In the wintery mean time, I'll line up everything I want to chrono and do it in one fine 70 degree, sunshiny spring day with daffodils and crocuses popping out of the ground.
