Anyone rode a Ironbut?
« on: February 21, 2010, 06:51:58 AM »
How many of you guys have rode a Ironbut ride? I'm thinking about trying one this spring. I'm thinking 3 Ibuprofen before leaving and 2000 mg of B 12. The Ibeprohen helps out with the sore but,and the B 12 will give me more energy, and alertness. Has anyone tried this?  Digger

I think our magic formula was a hang over and cris-cross.

That was many years ago.

I've been riding for almost 40 years and never understood the reasoning behind a Ironbutt ride. To get on the interstate and blast for 500 miles @ 80 miles an hour in one direction just to stop someplace and nap for 8 hours before turning around and blasting back. Kinda like takin' a gun to the range and runnin' a thousand rounds thru it, just  shootin' at the berm. I always figured it must be the patch and the license plate bracket that makes it worth while. Around here, it seems to be an ego thing with BMW riders.......coupla them from town here do it every year........then hardly put another thousand miles on all summer. ::) 50 years ago, doin' it on a rigid frame would be quite an accomplishment, but nowadays, even me with my fatass, with the ol' lady on the back, with the R.K. loaded down like a pack mule, can ride from 7 in the morning till 11 at night while only stopping for gas, Red Bull and Snicker bars. Then we get up the next morning and do it all again. Not a big deal. Difference is, we're enjoying the ride, seeing America from the seat of the bike, and gettin some kewl pics while we're at it.....and altho we never make it a thousand miles, we have done 800 several times. To me, miles in a day mean very little compared to quality hours in the saddle.

But this is my opinion....if it trips your trigger, go for it. Yep, three IBs every four hours, lots of water and keep yourself covered as much as possible. Wind @ 80mph will suck a lot of moisture and energy outta exposed skin, leading to dehydration and mild hypothermia. This can tend to make you confused and slow at reacting and make you tire quicker.

My reasoning behind this is to vist an old friend in Grand Junction Co.Its just alittle over 1000 miles, and I'm thinking about rideing straight through. After a day of rest, and visting a friend,I'll drop down and make the loop around Durango and Silverton. Have you rode hy. 50 across Co. and can you make good time on it?Probably another stupid idea of mine, but it sounds like something I could do for my self ( im 68 and not getting any younger)    Digger

Then you got a better reason than a patch or license plat bracket for doing it. ;D

In order to qualify for a legitimate Iron Butt ride there are a few things one must do to verify the ride. I've been asked several times to do a ride like this(generally it is from here to Murdo, S.D. and back) and have done some research. The info can be found here.......http://www.ironbutt.com/rides/ss1000.htm

Still I would think it would be a much more enjoyable and memorable ride taken at a leisurely pace on scenic secondary roads. Either way, it sounds like a 'ell of a trip. Hope you can do it.

Out here we have the Lawman 1000, its a 36 hour endurance run though two states.
I ran it until I hit 50, then decided I had had enough.

No Thanks, 500 miles in one day is the limit of my "fun factor".

Yep,it's a tough ride(1000 miles in 24 hrs.) but I've rode 700 miles in 1 day's ride and I was still having fun.As for as sightseeing there's not much to look at in western Ok.and the panhandle of Texas anyway so I might as well just cover some miles.   Digger

I got a chance to look at a bunch of the 'butt bikes once, it was fun to look at the gadgetry. Lots of sheepskin on seats as well as aux tanks, nav/com etc. I'd never think of doing it though. My record is 986mi. in one day straight thru and I was getting damn flaky towards the end getting near home. Foolishly, I started the ride with a blinding hangover, but hey, I'd been at a rally! The B12 sounds like a fine idea. 500 is around my limit these days if I have any choice in the matter.

Go for it Ditchdigger. Ain't nothing wrong with a little ego boost. Lifes too short not to say that you have not tried something. The b-12 is good but keep a few of these 5 hour energy shots in your your pocket and use them right.  The 5 state run the first of May up in the Panhandle would be a good warm up for that iron ass run.

I have been from Cortez to Walsenburg on 160 several times and it is not bad road to drive just watch for the wildlife close from Cortez to Del Norte they are thick. You get to cross Wolf Creek pass which is exciting then the San Juan Valley. Good ride for me and not too crowded like 70 is.
After you leave Pueblo 50 is ok for me. You are close to the Royal Gorge and a old west town tourist thing. Me and the OL really like Salida and have stayed there several times in the past. You ride alot right on the Arkansas river and there used to be plenty of places to stop by the river for a break. Used to be small store in Cotapaxi that we stopped at for a pop and snack

Where you starting out from and where are you leaving OK thru. The I-40 route is faster but the Ok panhandle runs you thru smalltown USA and you leave the state at Boise City.

I'll be leaving Durant at 4 am,west on 70 to Vernon Tx.and then on in to Amarillo Tx. From Amarillo going west to Albaqurque and then north to Grand Junction. I should be in Amarillo by 10 am and in Albuquerque by 2.30 pm. and in Durango by 5 pm and on into Grand Junction by 10 pm. At least thats the plan for now,if I can just hold up my end of the ride.   Digger

ditch digger I grew up in that area right off 550 12 miles south of Montrose Riding for time and  not being rested and on top of your game from DURANGO TO GRAND JUNCTION in the dark over Red MTN. pass is not anything I WOULD TRY and I know that road well. The road is in good condition and two lane fairly wide. but twisty, blind curves and plenty of CRITTERS (deer, elk, bear, mnt.goats) and those goats will show up when you wouldn't think anything could be on the road unless it fell from the sky.

Once you make it to Ouray your over the pass and in the valley and things get better, but deer are a problem at nite all the way to Montrose. ALL I'm saying this is no place to get in a hurry or being not focused  and worn down.

Can you take off earlier so you can run this in the lite of day?

No Iron Butt rallies, but did ride a 1980 Sportster from CT to FL for bike week.  No pain killers (except Jack Daniels) and no vitamins.  Did stuff plenty of newspaper under our jackets, and frequent stops at rest areas to stand under the blower hand dryers to try to keep warm.

May have to put this on the to do list. We had a ride here starting in Kingsport and it covered a bunch of states in 24 hours . Can't remember the details now . been a long time ago. Never did get to ride it and should have , the man that always wanted me to go on the trip is long gone now . We rode together a lot of miles.

Nope, never rode an ironbutt. But I can relate. 795 miles on the map in one day is my record, from the bad side of Colorado to Council Bluffs Iowa (home)in just over 16 hours. It really helps to have your old lady pounding on your back for the last 6 hours yelling at you to stop and get a motel, keeps you alert.
