I found a new {old style} contender in 44 mag. and was wondering if you can shoot rim fire{.22} from it? Or does it need to be sent back to T/C ? Thanks Rick..

Don't know how old you are talking, but the first frames had the rimfire, centerfire selector built into the breech - you have to make a 180 degree turn to move from centerfire to rimfire. I believe these frames had the safety switch as a slide bar through the hammer.

Even the earliest Contenders could fire rimfire and centerfire.  The selector was in the hammer - a screw you turn, but there was no safety at all on the earliest frames.

Thank you for the correction Ron, my terminology was way off! The selector switch is in the hammer, not the breech (What in creation was I thinking?) I apologize for the misleading information, wasn't intentional. I thought I used to have a frame that didn't have a safety on it, but that just didn't seem right - maybe that's the reason I don't have it anymore........of course I sold that to a good friend.

Actually, I don't think Contenders need a safety in the hammer at all since they have the automatic hammer block safety.  Of course, I'm just an engineer and not a lawyer.... :)
