45-70 Handi reload question
« on: January 15, 2009, 03:05:19 PM »
I'm not to much up on reloading and buy factory ammo.  A guy I work for reloads and I think he has a pistol in this caliber.  Anyway, I was given some reloads and I have the specs.  Can anyone tell me what to expect assuming the data is correct?  Currently I shoot LE sighted @ +1 inch @ 100 yds and my rifle was shooting -3.75 inches @ 200yds.  I do not want to adjust scope, I'm just curious about 50-100 yard performance.

Caliber:45/70 govt
Powder: IMR 4198
Weight: 39 Grains
Bullet: Rem, .458 J.H.P.
Weight 300 Grain
Case W.W.
Primer: Win. WLRM
Times Loaded: New
Seated: 2.538"

300 GR. SIE HP      IMR      IMR 4198      .458"      2.525"      45.0      2008      23,500 CUP      48.0      2138      27,800 CUP
Your 39gr's is a down loaded recipe.  Try some though

What does the 2138 number refer to?  Muzzle velocity?  Muzzle energy?  I assume the 39 grains is a light load, but I don't know.

I would say from the reading that the 45gr load produces 2008 fps @ the 25k psi , and @ 27k psi- from the 48gr load produces 2138. Both of which should move you smartly to the rear. Variation is the problem, not just the fps. The original Creedmoor matches were shot at  1000 yards with 45/70's and a mid-range trajectory of 28 to 32 FEET. Velocity is only convenient to a point.

Never trust your life with someone else's reloads.
If I don't load it or the factory don't load it I don't shoot it.
It only takes one screw up to kill you.

Looking at the Hornady manual the 39 gr of IMR 4198 and a 300 gr bullet work out just a tad over 1700fps from a 22" barrel. This is a very mild load. The trajectory of this load compared to the Hdy LE would be noticable more curved.

Using the Sierra ballistic calculator the 300 gr Rem bullet would have the following trajectory.

   100 yards   115 yards     200 yards
    + 1.00"        zero           minus 14 3/4 "
