Question about bullet extraction
« on: January 17, 2009, 05:31:59 PM »
I am new to reloading. I have reloaded about 50 rounds for my 30-06 with the Lee Loader with no problems.  I had been using brass I kept from fired commerical ammo I had used. I decided to buy new Win brass. I ran the cases through the neck sizer (hammered them through actually) to make sure the neck was round.   I seated a bullet, just to measure the OAL and then used my hammer (inertia) type bullet puller to extract it.  I pounded and pounded that thing and could not get the bullet out. Got so frustrated that I just took a pair of pliers to it. Scraped it all up but could not get it out.  So I just pounded the bullet into the case (which was unprimed), crimped the mouth and threw the case away.    Now here is the question.  Should the bullet be that hard to remove? I have loaded dummy rounds with the fired brass and never had that kind of problem removing the bullets.

I've run into a few that I didn't think would ever come out. To the point that I feared the puller would break apart first, but they did finally pop out of the case. I've found that a good solid hitting surface, like the end of a 4 x 4 sitting on concrete will react better than say hitting it on the side of a piece of wood. Less bounce I guess.

If I pound on my WOODEN reloading bench the bullet will never come out.  If I pound on the CONCRETE floor it will come out within five hits.

It is all about the bounce.

I have  a 4"X1/4" oiece of flat steal I use and it tkaes some pretty goog whacks sometimes to get them out. Wood dosn't work as well.

BTW I am gonna buy a collet puller soon. Just because I've broken two inertia puller banging bullets out.

Its likely that the case mouth was slightly crimped and the case mouth itself was rough. Both will leave a bullet seemingly welded to its case. Kinetic pullers are nice and work well enough most of the time. But a good Colet style bullet puller will never fail you.

New cases need attention too. When I buy new brass, there are a couple things I always do.

1) They get a quick cleaning, 15 Min's in the tumbler.
2) They get their flash holes deburred inside.
3) They get FULL LEGNTH re-sized.
4) The lengths are checked & trimmed as necessary.
5) They get the case mouths deburred inside and out.
6) Another quick tumble to remove sizing lube.

I realize what I do is not mandatory, but when I'm done, I KNOW the cases are ready for any loading I will do.

Thank You for the replys.  Guess I was just afraid that if the bullet was in the case that tight it could cause problems.  I have since deburred  the case mouths and checked the flash holes.  I can not full lenth resize the cases myself,  but maybe I can get a friend at work who load 30-06 to do it for me.

The burrs on the UNchamferred necks can hold a bullet VERY tight. As for the kinetic puller, I use a 1" thick piece of lead about 4" in diameter to pound on. A press is MUCH better to pull bullets. Just raise the bullet thru the top, grab it with a pair of pliers and pull the case off. some times it mars the bullet BUT the case is still good.

I recently had a similar problem when trying to remove Hornady SP Interlocks from .30-06 brass.  I was able to remove many Gamekings with an RCBS inertia puller after 4-5 hits on the garage floor but the Hornadys gave me fits.  I assume the cannelure on the Hornadys is the difference.  Now I'm waiting on the big brown truck to bring me the package from Midway that has the collet puller in it.

I've always had a hard time removing bullets from a dummy case, with a kenetic hammer. Shells that contain powder, have never been a problem. I figured it was because the blow of the hammer and the powder slamming into the back of the bullet was what was pulling or pushing the bullet out.

I use an inertia bullet puller and hit it on a piece of 4" round X 4" stainless after about 5 or 6 hits the bullet comes out
