I started filling my freezer by taking a doe opening morning.  I should have taken another one Sunday morning but I made a stupid mistake and spooked her.  As said above though, I haven't seen any rutting signs.  No scrapes, no rubs, etc.  I never even saw a buck while hunting both days.  My work schedule only allows me to hunt on the weekends so I'm looking forward to next Sat / Sun getting back out.  Hopefully, I'll be able to take two or three more before season is out.

BTW, I started butchering my own, starting with this doe over the weekend.  I've done it with a friend a couple of times now and this was my first by myself.  I was so easy once you know how to do it.  I got MUCH better cuts of meat, all boneless.  This is definitely the way to go if you have the time and the stomach.  Actually, if you can gut a deer, you can do the rest easily.  For anyone intimidated by it (as I was before trying), I would learn more about it and give it a shot.  It's well worth it!

Good luck for the rest of season!

Hunted this morning, not going back till Wednesday so as too give'm a rest and I got housework too do anyways. Neighboring farm,, hunters saw a decent buck with a doe about 7:30am, I didn't see nothin'  :'(
I cut my own backstraps out and the rest gets ground-up into burger mainly for chili and jerky. I have found that some meat processing places likes to keep a little backstrap for themselves so I take 5 miniutes and do it myself.

I know a few people that grind the whole thing too.  I can't believe people don't want the steaks and the great roasts out of the sirloin portion of the deer.  Personal preference but I love the other cuts of meat.

Don't get me wrong I like all the other cuts too, but I LOVE a big ol' iron pot of deer chili over an open fire on a cold day in the woods and a sack of deer jerky while in my stand the best, deer meatloaf is excellent also. Saw a picture today of a 20 pointer killed in Henry Co. Saturday, HOLY SH**!! :o

Ahhh, yes, the season just keeps getting better and better......(reference to my adventures above and in the Modern ML forum).  On Weds., went out with my cousin to a little farm we hunt that's owned by his uncle.  Now, I was up pretty late Tues., and then my 9 year old got up at 2 AM puking his guts out, so I got back to sleep about 3:30 AM.  Got back up at 5 AM, drove 35 miles to meet my cousin.

Got out to the farm, and was set up on a hillside at 7 AM.  I was TIRED.  I laid back on the hill, got a good head rest on my fanny pack, and proceeded to doze/hunt.   :D  The hill is steep enough that you can lay down flat, yet still see 90% of the area.  Now, my cousin and I are somewhat notorious for dozing while we're out, and we both keep saying that one day, the other will just start shooting without warning to scare the crap out of the other one.

I had just blown on a grunt tube, then closed my eyes again, when about 10 minutes later, Gary says "Big buck!  Big buck!  Down in the creek!"  I sit up, getting ready to say "That isn't funny, butthole."

Then I see the buck too.  Gary's standing up by this time, watching the deer through his scope....I blow on the grunt again, and the buck jumps up toward us, then right back down the hill.  I keep telling Gary "Shoot!  Shoot!  He's getting ready to bolt!"  Gary still has his gun up, the buck finally runs off through the creek and back into the timber.  I got my gun and found him in the scope, by now he's about 80 yds or so out and going fast.  I toss a shot at him, already knowing that I don't have a prayer of hitting him.

I ask Gary why he didn't shoot, the damn thing was only about 40 yds from him when he stopped at the grunt call.  Gary just kept saying, "I wasn't sure of the shot"....  I keep telling him that he needs to practice offhand shooting more, maybe now he'll do it.  I also  told him "That was your one chance this year, next time, I'm not waiting for you to shoot, I'll just take the shot and be done with it."

I didn't shoot first, I feel that whoever actually spots the animal should get the first shot...just the way I am.  It wasn't a big buck, looked like at 8pt, maybe 15"-16" wide, Boone and Crockett score would have been less then 125".  BUT, and a big but, it was big enough for Gary to mount on the wall, which is what he's hunting for.  I wouldn't have mounted it, I'd have just put the rack on a plaque.

Oh well, we'll see how it goes next time!   ;)

Took my 9yr old daughter evrey chance we could go, saw 7 deer, 5 of which were small bucks, but any would have been a definite trophy for her. She got her gun up on three of them, but just couldn't make a shot before they were gone. One saw us and ran before she could shoot, and the other two was walking through the woods and wouldn't stop long enough for her to shoot. The other deer came in from behind and smelled us and spooked. Oh well, I'll try again during M/L and she will during the late youth hunt in December.
