the coffee pot
« on: March 23, 2009, 04:43:51 PM »
Over the years I've shared a campfire with lots of different folks. But it seams to me the center of every camp I've been in was the coffee pot. ;)

I've drank coffee made from gourmet beans and brewed in $1000.00 coffee makers and I've shared a campfire with cowboys, hunters, hobos, fishermen and campers all across this great land.

The cowboys used a old 3# coffee can with a bail made from bailing wire. Creek water with a handfull of their favorite brand was boiled until pronounced done. A splash cold water to settle the grounds and the cups were filled.

The backpackers used little bity spyder looking stoves to bring the brew to a boil and then it was poured into a french press with the grounds.

The fishermen kept the pot boiling for days on the back of their diesel boat stove. Mighty strong stuff and called boat coffee.

Some thought the best flavor was in the bean, some in the roast, some in the brand, and some in the method but they all had their own prefferences in the pot and its contents.

How about you my friend, Pull up that chunk of firewood and sit here by the fire, and lets hear your opinion on the best cup of joe.......................

You know Bill I went through a stage of drinking Luziane instant years ago. I thought it was best spooned into a pot of cold water and brought to a rolling boit on a old campfire, then pull it back a little to simmer a few minuite before filling the cup.

How do you fix that Tasters choice?

After 40 some years of camping I find that I use the simplest way the most. I have a plastic thing that holds a filter for the Maxwell House and sets on top of the coffee cup. You pore the water through the coffee grounds into the cup. You can make it weak or extra strong. Boil the water any way you want. Works on any size cup with any brand coffee. I have one of these gadgets in my camping stove kit and one on the sidecar and one in the camping van. I also keep a stainless cup with me no matter  how I am camping. I also generally have this setup with me as well as a small size stove, small pot, and water with me in the jeep when hunting or fishing for the day. This gadget cost @ 2.50 last time I got one to give a friend. I came with a cup and small supply of filters. Last one came from Krogers and I have seen them in camping catalogs for a lot higher price.
