Question on Lyman Mustang
« on: January 19, 2009, 11:41:05 AM »
I was in Cabalas in Fort worth Texas today and ran across a Lyman Mustang 50 cal  mag.break open. The Gun was great looking well finished and very nice wood with a semigloss finish with a great looking ram rod.
The gun reminds me a little of the Beretta single shot trap gun and is imported From Italy. The last thing I need is another muzzleloader but then we need to forget need and just have I want. :) :) :) any one have any hands on with one of these. They are listed on the net for 329.00 in store was 399.00. I have a TC Triumph and a CVA hunter bolt mag. Buy that thing really caught my eye.

I bought one in May `07 DEACONLLB when they first came out and really like it.  I've always been a fan of top lever break-open guns and fell for it based on the picture in the Lyman catalog.  Didn't actually see one until mine arrived in the big brown truck.

Mine is no tack driver but I have a few loads that will stay under two-inches at 100 yards - adequate for hunting.  The trigger on mine was not very good.  It was rough and creepy and  I had to work it over to get it to my liking.  I like the looks and feel of the gun and don't plan on getting rid of it.  The action is rock solid and tight.  Barrel fit to the hinge and breech is excellent.  I have over a thousand rounds out of mine and it shows no signs of becoming loose.  The sliding safety is a neat feature, as is the magnetic ring on the breech plug which just sucks the 209 primers into place.  That "very nice wood" is actually a faux finish over straight grained beech.  I think it's applied with some sort of dipping process.  Everyone who has held mine has admired the fancy walnut stock without ever guessing.  Mine has held up quite well through two hunting seasons and many, many range sessions with no sign of chipping or scratching.  I've heard Lyman improved the trigger action after the first year of production, but don't know that to be a fact.

EDIT:  The good thing about buying from someplace like Cabala's is that you can check the trigger pull before you buy.  I STRONGLY suggest that if you decide to buy one from Cabala's you ask to see the gun department manager and tell him you will buy the gun for $300 and see what happens.  I'll bet you get it for that price.

I thought that the finish on the wood was great and I thought that it might be plastic but from the feel I knew that it was wood. I also think that the gun looks alot like the TCR 87. I also have a Galef folding companion in 20 guage that is made in Italy that looks alot like the lyman and it is also a clone of the beretta II trap gun. Are you using a scope on yours?
We use the term tack driver but I dont think many of us are good enough to see a tack at 100 yrds much less hit it :) :) :) In the times we live in have to kidd a little. Thanks for your input.

PS have checked a number of sources and all say out of stock or 3 week wait, might not be easy to get a shop to back off price much.

I have a 3x9 Leupold on it.  It fits the gun well.

It doesn't cost a thing to try.  You might be surprised.  I bought a TC Omega X7 from our local Cabala's Dec 26th.  It was priced at $428.  I offered to buy it for $328.  They said OK.  I used a "$30 off any purchase of $150 or more" coupon and got the gun for $298.
