.260 Remington Long Range Rifle
« on: July 19, 2008, 02:37:11 AM »
I like the .260 Remington very much and would like to get a long range bolt action in the caliber, something capable of .5MOA or better. I cannot find such readily listed by any manufacturer. Does anyone know of a manufacturere offering a decent long range rifle in this caliber off the shelf? I would like to avoid the third party assembly required by buying the components and then finding someone to build the rifle.

Doesn't Savage make one ? If you want long range, wouldn't a 6.5 SPC or something of that sort be more what you want ? Unless you are only talking 600 or less. It's important that the bullet be supersonic at the target.
Anyhow, the .260 is low-recoil & accurate,so it ought to be fun. Just remember, the twist rate has to be right for the weight bullet you intend to use.

I build many rifles like you want, but they are all made to order. But if you want an off the rack rifle, the two companies I would recommend are GA Precision and Mcmillan. So far they make the best made production rifles I have had a chance to examine.

The quality of a mans life is in direct proportion to his commitment to excellence.

A bad day at the range is better than a good day at work!!

I love the 260 for silhouette and have one for deer. They're not too common but you could find a used Remington 700 in 260. I think they only make the Model 7 in 260 now. or you could try the Remington custom shop.

Both of mine were put together by a smith, with trued actions, 1 in 8 twist barrels and shoot below 0.5 moa with 140 gr smks.

I have a 260 CDL LTD, not what you are looking for. Keep a eye out on Gunbroker for a Remington 700 VLS in 260. They made them for a few years. I sold one last winter in excellent cond for about $800. Your only other route is custom. The caliber is worth it. The CDL is my 3rd rifle in this caliber, I also  had a ADL synthetic. All good rifles. I Don;t understand why Remington treats it like a red headed step child. The gun writers give it a good thumbs up.

If you like the 260 Remington,

Savage makes a factory target rifle in 6.5-284 which has been a hot cartridge in 1000 yard shooting, but has seen a bit of shift from to the 6.5x47 Lapua (similar to the 260 Remington) and to the 284 Winchester.  The nice thing about the barrels is they can be swapped very easily due to their barrel mounting system.

Remington most definitely makes a bolt action in 260 Remington, but unless you get one of the 40x models from the custom shop,  .5 moa accuracy out of the box would be hit or miss.

While the original post is old, I see updates are rather current.   If you are thinking you want custom, but are nervous about what can be habitually long wait times when you custom order a gun, the best solution is to get all the parts together (action, stock, trigger, barrel, etc) and then bring into a skilled builder for final machining and assembly which can be turned around quickly (within a month).  Most custom builders get backed up waiting on components like stocks which can take 4 months once ordered.   One barrel maker quoted me 6 months for a barrel.

As a 1000 yard shooter, I have learned to just go to brunos shooters supply who stocks an assortment of high end actions, barrels and mcmillan stocks so you can pretty much get everything quickly.

I wonder how a 260 improved with a quick twist would work for long rang shooting.
