squirrel dog anyone??
« on: November 13, 2008, 07:53:14 AM »
I would like to find a started dog around S.E. Oklahoma if anyone knows of anyone raising/training them around here. Would also like to hear about hunting with dogs if any of you have a good story or two. I have used dogs on hogs before but never got to go with a good tree dog.
Thanks,

Hey okieshooter:
Reading your post reminded me of a minature dashhound my kids had when they were growing up.    One day I went squirrel hunting, and he got out of the house and tracked me down almost a mile.   Well, he tagged along as I eased down a dry creekbed.  I spotted a fox squirrel drinking from a pot hole in the middle of the creekbed and shot it, wounding it in the leg.   Well "Jay Jay" we called him, was curious and took off after that squirrel which in turn decided to fight than run, and he bit that dog right on the nose, and held on.   By the time  Jay Jay got'em shook off, he was 'M A D', and that badger fighting instinct that those dogs were bred for,  came out, and that nice little puppy dog turned into a tazmanian devil.   It was comical, but Jay Jay's bloody nose taught him a lot that day.    From then on, when he saw me take up my .22 rifle, he'd get all excited, and I'd have to take him hunting.   He had a "nose" for squirrels, and made an excellent hunter and retriever.   He was quite a good little pardner too. ;D

My dad swears by minature pinschers. I have a shetland sheep dog that does a fair job, but she is probabl the exception (their usually skittish).
If he's carrying a singleshot, don't expect a warning shot!

Everybody; I always wanted a squirrel dog. So two years ago me and grandson Noah was in back yard shooting his BB gun at a soda can. He's, Noah's in the first grade this year. We stop'ed when we heard a dog barking at us. We walk'ed over to the road and there by a big oak sat a small dog. It did'nt run but kept barking at us. It did'nt take long and he became very friendly. The lady down the road comes by, she has show dogs, and says it looks like a jack russell. I don't think it is because it dont have enough white hair. The first thing I begun to notice is he likes to dig moles and acts like he might hunt. So I've hunted him now for two season's. I hunted him hard last year and killed maybe twenty squirrels off him. He hardly ever barked when tree'ed. This year he's really starting to bark tree'd, especialy if he can't see me. If he can see me he jumps on the side of the tree or just sits there and looks at me. I killed two off of him saturday and will be going in the morning if the wind don't blow to hard. Don't know what breed he is but he sure likes to squrrill hunt. I would guess he's about two plus years old. Can't wait to get'em out tommorrow.   Jenks,  PS. His name is Buddy

A tail with a happy ending.   The old saying "one mans trash is another man's treasure."   jenkst; sounds like you've found yourself a real squirrel dog, and Buddy found a good home.
Thanks for the post...... :D

FourBee; Got out at daylight and started the day off right. Buddy got on one in a cedar thicket and pushed the squirrel out and up a nice oak for a good shot. He barked several times and was really excited. He treed another in a big hickory but was split from top to bottom and got I guess in a hole. He barked several times again. Then I saw him trying to climb another tree but could'nt find the squirrel. A few hours later he trees a fox squirrel but didn't bark, I missed a chip shot, the squirrel hit the ground where Buddy again chase's him about sixty yards and puts him up another oak. Aimed a little better and got'em. Again no bark. If the woods wasn't so open I might not have seen him treed. I guess it wasn't fifteen minutes later he put another big red squirrel up and we got him, but no bark. I guess it was'nt a bad day. He barks on two trees. Got three and could have gotten another that just happened to come my way. I let him go hopeing Buddy would pick up his scent but the squirrel left the country through the tree tops and never hit the ground again. Had a good time and settled for three.     Jenks

buddy may be and souns like a sight hunter. they are the best for squirrels.i wouldnt worry bout him not barking. sounds like he barks when he needs to for yu to notice him.try ignoreing him when he is treed and see what he does, hide behind a big tree or something. bet he barks if he thinks yu aint lookin.thats the way the best dog i had was.take him out as much as yu can and yu will will have a awesum dog for hunting. he may tree other things if he encounters them once he knows what its all about.yur a lucky man and treat him well.
