Old Powder
« on: February 08, 2009, 01:58:06 AM »
I recently found an old unopened tin of DuPont 4350 powder. I must have bought it 20 years ago. Its been in a cardboard box in a cupboard . Would you use it or loose it ? - Pete

I would check it, use it if there is no evidence of deterioation.   20 years really isn't all that old.  HOW it's been stored is much more important than the age itself.

Signs of deterioration would be a foul smell when you take a whiff of it (don't jam your nose to close at first....we don't want you to bounce your head off the floor!!!) and when you open it up, when you pour it, if some of it comes out in a fine cloud like baby powder (a fine cloud of black dust) that's an indication of bad powder. So, for the twenty some bucks a pound....why risk it?  But, if it smells and looks fine....I would use it with no apprehension.

Please mail it to me and I'll let you know if it WAS dangerous or not.

Use it if it doesn't stink

Don't know about your powder, but I have some a bit older than yours that's still fine. Check it out as mentioned above. I bet it's fine!
