Remington 6.8 SPC?
« on: November 30, 2008, 01:08:19 PM »
Hi, new guy here. I recently purchased a Remington 6.8 SPC 14" barrel for my Contender. I thought I might use it for deer hunting. I mounted a T/C 2.5-7x variable power scope. The problem is that I also bought two boxes of Remington 115 GR Core-Lokt Ultra Bonded ammo and have had multiple misfires while trying to sight in this combo. So far I have tried to shoot all twenty shells from one box and had only seven that actually fired. That is not a misprint. Only seven out of twenty. The numbers on the box are R161/4-B PKG.61501A G58196459. I have not tried to shoot any shells from the second box as I have zero confidence in this ammo. I have three barrels for the gun and have never had any misfires with any other ammo. The dimples on the primer look the same on the few shells that did fire as on those that did not. Has anyone used this ammo in a Contender? How do I return this junk?  ???

I have a 23" barrel in that chambering, but the only factory rounds I have fired were Silver State brand.  Have you added a hammer spur?  That has caused light hammer strikes for other folks..other than that I'm afraid I am not going to be much help.  Where did you purchase the ammo?  Most retailers had a "NO RETURN" policy on ammo.  You might be able to get in touch with Remington.

I have a MGM 6.8 on my contender using reloads had one snap on me the problem was the barrel was not closed enough to hit the primer hard enough to go off. Hammer spur will cause a misfire too. If Rem 6.8 is like their 22 shells thats about normal rate of misfires.
Hope this helps

I'd be more inclined to think it's the frame, barrel combo. is this a custom barrel? my through is that the locking lugs are not going far enough under the breach shelf to engage the butterfly safety, hence the light primer hits.did you try snapping the barrel shut with some effort and see if the weapon fires? need more info

I had some in 280 do the samething this was in a handi rifle.  called remington and the guy said "heck there may not be any powder in them haha" that was the words out of his mouth. He told me to send the ones that didn"t fired back (at my cost). I ask would they replace the box or aleast the ones that didn't fire "nope". That is why i stopped buying remington ammo!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unfortunately this seems to be a fairly common problem with the 6.8 SPC.  My hunting buddy got 2 carbine barrels for his grandsons and had the same problem with both.  He was using Hornady ammo.  He also was using a hammer spur on one of them...it didn't create the problem, but it did increase the problem.  He talked w/ both Hornady and TC and got somewhat the same answer from both. Chamber made to the upper side of Sami specs and ammo made to the lower side of military specs.  Hornady replaced his ammo(the new stuff shot with no problem), TC suggested he try Remington ammo and you hold the answer to that.  Hopefully you reload and can cure the problem with proper sizing of the brass.  GOOD SHOOTIN',

I had a brand new G2 that would not fire, right out of the box. I had to send it back to TC for warranty repair.

I've had good success in my 14" 6.8 for both hunting and silhouette, without the problem you describe in probably over 400 rounds.  I use Hornady dies, Remington brass, Winchester LR primers, H322 and H335 powder, and bullets from the 90g Speer to 135g Sierra MK.  The T/C stock barrel is on a one year old G2, and I don't use a hammer spur.  I like the cartridge - I got it instead of a 6.5 TCU.

I have a factory 6.8 spc carbine barrel sitting on a shelf. I never had a miss fire with it, shooting it on an old early frame, WITH a hammer spur. My ammo was all my own handloads, as I've never seen a box of factory ammo on a store shelf anywhere to try it. My brass was Rem brass, and I full length sized it in an RCBS die. I've shot the Sierra's and the Barnes 100-110's from mine.

I was getting poor accuracy, and it turns out I have a bad spot in the rifling of mine, right in front of the crown. I believe that to be the issue with mine. I've just never bothered to send it back to TC. I will someday though.

Try shooting it without the hammer spur, maybe your hammer spring isn't as stiff as mine. Mine's still got the original spring in it, and I bought it used in '81, guess I'm lucky there. Also, like was mentioned earlier, try "snapping" the barrel closed firmly, could be a barrel lockup issue.
