I am a pretty serious photographer, and even though I own a ton of Nikon film gear, It is the digital gear that gets the most use. It's just quicker, cheaper, and easier to produce a quality image using digital.
Having said that, film will be around for a long time yet. For a lot of the same reasons people hunt with a primitive weapon as apposed to a modern rifle, or prefere classic cars to modern. My D3 is a hell of a camera, feature wise, but is really just a computer with a lens. My F2 is a mechanical tool, a collection of hand fit gears, levers, and small parts that feels good in the hand, and represents an era of quality we wont see again.
The best part is now quality film gear is available at dirt cheap prices. A Nikon F3, for example, goes for about $200.00-250.00 on eBay, a Canon A-1, under $100.00.
