500 S & W
« on: January 29, 2009, 03:47:42 PM »
I am interested in a new barrel and the 500 caught my eye, but I have not been able to find a lot of info. I'm looking for a fun to shoot ( 50-100 yd) and easy to reload. Can I get some personal  "been there-done that" from some of you guys?
 thanks, Dan

From an accuracy standpoint there are better ones that come to mind.
If you want big, the 45-70 is tough to beat. If size is not a priority the 30-30 is a real winner. Both always seem to be the most consistantly accurate handi chamberings.

You hear a lot of good things about the 45-70, and not a whole lot about the 500 S & W and that is what I've based my decision on about my next barrel.

There is also other things to consider, and recoil seems to be one that can effect how either one shoots.

My culled down Handi's are the 45-70, and then I have a few others to keep it company...357 Mag/Max. .45 LC/.454 Casull Carbine, .243 Ultra, and 20 gauge Tracker II.

I don't want to discourage you from buying a 500 if that's what you want, I have one and I don't regret buying it.  That being said don't be under the impression that you will be able to shoot 2 moa with it right out of the gate.  There are many of us here that own them and do not have our individual guns figured out yet.  But the raw horsepower of the 500 is hard to beat. If you like to tinker and reload it would be a great gun for you to do just that with.

I HAVE A 45-70 HANDI AND BC AND A 30-30, I JUST WANT SOME THING ELSE TO PLAY WITH.  I GET ALL THE CAST BULLETS I WANT FROM MOTO357 (MY SON), SO RELOADING IS NOT AN ISSUE. THE RE-COIL ISN'T AN ISSUE ( UNLESS YOU PULL THE TRIGGER ).

OK, so you WANT TO PLAY. Great, have at it.
I didn't mention it before. But I do have one and I do like mine. I  am still working out/looking for a good load. My best, most consistant so far is XMP5744 powder and a 440gr WFGC cast bullet. I was having some flier problems with jacketed stuff. I have shot every commercially available bullet and many powders I can find. All so far with the same results.
Between my friends we have three of these and all of ours do the same things. Its Minor frustrating. But much better now that I know its just a matter of finding the correct combo as I have had a sneak peek with that 5744/440 lead bullet load...

I have shot the .500 S&W out of a handgun and do not find it's recoil as bad as some have suggested. I still prefer my 45-70 or .44 Mag but I am in the market for a used .500 S&W barrel with iron sights as a gift for my friend that I hunt and fish with in Maine. He has the .500 S&W revolver and has been thinking of a single shot rifle as a matching gun. What worries me is the problems I have read about regarding .500's on Handi frames, they all seem to "shoot loose" after a time, and not a long time either. Any feelings on this problem? Does it exist or not?....<><....:)

The 50-70 uses .510" bullets, the .500S&W uses .500" bullets, so no unless you used custom dies to load the smaller bullets. Or just have custom dies and reamer made for the .500 Martin. Either way it would be an expensive conversion.

MSP:Mine has 600+rounds through it and is just as tight as it left the factory. It sure is a hoot! In fact in a tee shirt it is far nicer than the metal buttplate on a Buffalo Classic. No surprise there, eh?
