Ruger 10/22 trigger question
« on: December 10, 2008, 02:20:02 PM »
My ruger is about 10 years old and I'd like to adjust it to make it lighter. It takes a lot to pull it. I've never messed with any trigger and was wondering if this is something I can do or if I need to get a smith to work on it. I feel like it would help my accuracy tremendously!!!

You can buy a new hammer for a lighter trigger.  Mine dropped to about 2.5 pounds.  Volquartsen and Power Custom make them.  Cost $30+.  Easy enough to install.  Especially if you don't install the new trigger return spring included in the hammer kits.  Many people say just use the new hammer and the included hammer shims, don't replace the trigger return spring, don't install the new hammer spring.  I tried installing mine different ways.  Just installing the new hammer made the biggest difference.  Helps to have the Ruger owner's manual open to the parts schematic.

I did a full tear down yesterday on my 22 year old 10/22 and had the parts in my hand.
You may be ablt to polish the hammer and the sear as well as cleaing the trigger group of all the gunk may help.  You know all the greese mixed with unfired powder, dust, and field debris.
Total time of tear down and clean was about an hour.  And I took everything apart cleaned it all and reassemblled it in that time.
But if your looking for target crisp I +1 everything about the drop in parts.
Mid south, midway, cabelas, gander mt, or brownells should have any 10/22 parts you may want to trick out your gun how ever you want.

Just replaced the hammer in my new 10/22 on sat----just used the hammer and shims and didn't touch the springs---VQ hammer btw.

Went from 8+ lbs--all my scale goes up to---down to 3.5lbs---was relatively cheap and easy to do.

I did the Volquartsen drop in hammer.....trigger pull went down to just shy of 3 lbs which is perfect for me.   Easy install.
I'm just tryin' to keep everything in balance, Woodrow. You do more work than you got to, so it's my obligation to do less. (Gus McCrae)

I used the VQ hammer and auto bolt release kit and had no problems. Easy change.
