Bacon Grease For Lure
« on: August 25, 2003, 10:08:51 AM »
I was wondering does anyone know what bacon grease would eb good for. I heard of a lure called Putrid Pudding that uses bacon grease. I think there alsomay be a camp fire set that uses bacon grease as a lure. WOuld it be good as a lure by itself? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depends on what you are trying to catch. Bacon grease will bring in skunks, possum, coon and curious bears, as well as the neighbors dog and cat. Be careful as you may get more things you weren't planning on trapping. If you're going for fox, coon, or 'yotes, you're better off sticking to a call that's geared more for them. At least that's my experience. Good luck!

I have to agree with Thumper on this one, there are better things to take furbearers with than bacon grease.A good lure should outcatch bacon grease . Tom

I agree with thumper and bogmaster.  Simple things like bacon grease were used by trappers back in the olden days with modest redults, before complex commercial lures were available to the trapper which increased the trapper's harvest considerably.  Ace :-)

The reasone I was asking was because a buddy of mine once told em about a lure/bait that he saw in a earlier issue of FFG. It consisted of bacon grease, skunk essence, and other lure making ingredients. He made some of it and when I smelt it I thought my nose would fall off. It is the only lure I have ever smelt that I couln't stand. He said he would have to wait until really cold weather before using it, so as not to catch every possum in the country. Has anyone ever heard of this lure called PUTRID PUDDING? :D

I've never heard of the "putrid pudding" you refer to.  Once one adds skunk essence to the bacon grease, they have now made a lure out of the grease which would probably increase the animal response. However, if it was now so strong with skunk as you mentioned, the bacon grease odor has been overpowered by the skunk and probably nullified completely by the skunk, making it a one substance call again. What constitutes an exceptional lure, in my opinion, is a group of enticing odors and ingredients that can all be detected and analyzed by the canine.  This is what create a maximum response at the set and keeps the animal at the set longer.  Think about it a moment, if canines were to spend a lot of time going out of their way to smell skunk musk, in my locality at least, they would be zig-zagging all over the countryside wherever a skunk had been.  If they spent any time investigating each skunk encounter and hanging around to analyze it at each set, they would never get where they were going.  I think an enormous amont of skunk odor like a whole dead skunk buried in the set area does bring canines off their trave route and into the area where they can detect the sets lured with a multi-ingredient lure. However, to use skunk strictly as the lure itself leaves a lot to be desired. Ace :-)

ky16, man, your thinking to much, if ya just got to go do something, take your rod and reel and go catch you some fish to grind up with an old saugage grinder.  you can freeze them up and then get them out and grind them....dump some honey on them while you grind it, and some molases, maybie add alittle anis oil to it.  then you got a coon bait that will catch.  as far as canines go, your way better off to buy that stuf like i do.....matt

freeze that fish bait back untill you need it

Asa Lenon: The PUTRID PUDDING consists of more than skunk essence and bacon grease. I just don't know the other ingredients that go into it. I've never smelt anything like it. You could almost taste the stuff.
