Pennsylvania Proposes More Fluorescent Orange for Hunters
« on: June 29, 2003, 08:41:16 AM »
Pennsylvania is proposing making hunters wear 250 sq. inches of fluorescent orange at all times with a few exceptions. Turkey hunting and bow hunting being a couple.

Turkey hunters would be exempt when on a stand but required to wear a fluorescent orange hat when moving.

This is pretty much what I do in my state now even though I'm not required to do it and I advocate it to others. I also have a flag sewn on the back of my vest which I display while moving. I also sit with a tree at my back.

My feeling is that this probably came to past because a couple of turkey hunters in Pa. shot each other this past spring season. I don't know if they ever determined the real reason why. As I recall, both were up there in years so it may have just been diminished senses. This is why I hate to see anybody do anything foolish in the shooting sports. People are just waiting on the side lines to restrict us further.

While I encourage others to do the same as I and wear blaze orange while up and moving about, I'm not too crazy about new laws. I don't think you should legislate common sense.

What do you think?

Thats pretty much been the law for quite some time here in PA. Deer-250sq inches on head chest and back combined, bear is the same, small game is the same. Archery doesnt require orange when on stand but does when moving around during small game seasons. Fall turkey requires orange (250 sg in) when moving around and orange within 15' of calling location in the fall visable 360 degrees. Spring gobbler requires 100sq in while mooving but none while set up, is recomended however.  The ones that are "flatlanders" (no offence intended) are the ones that are screwing it up for everyone. You know what I mean, the 1 week a year "profesionals" from the citys, that like to get away from the wife and go hunting with the boys for 1 week a year and hardly think about or touch a rifle for the rest of the year.

Jack,

Where did you find the proposal?  I would like to read it specifically.  I am not a big fan of extensive blaze orange laws.  I think they foster the mentality "If it ain't orange go ahead and blast it."  I will check the PGC website.  If it weren't required at all I would still wear it during our regular deer season.
