Just got a 110...
« on: February 04, 2009, 01:10:39 PM »
She's an E series with an E prefix on her sn. Any idea of a year of manufacture?Paid $ 250 for her . Unfortunately , her previous owner didn't love her... She's a 30-06, not my first choice of caliber though, was hoping for a .308.Anyway, I'd like to make a semi-tactical out of her. I'd like a slightly heavier barrel than the soda straw she has, and a heavy(ish) synthetic stock. A sporter style is fine but I dont want to get any lighter than she is as recoil and I are NOT friends. I picked the 110 because of the ability to change barrels without a gunsmith or lathe etc.. Given the way things are looking , to me its a very important advantage! I also need to adjust her trigger alittle but am not exactly sure how its done and what screws effect what part of the trigger cycle. Also, what scope mounts , I prefer steel, would give me the most flexibility in scope lengths and size. She has a set of low 1 piece ( ring and base) Weavers , but my Leupy VX1 is too short in its ring spacing to fit.Any help/info is greatly appreciated.

I have a savage 110 30-06 in a Bell & Carlson duramax stock.  It's a pretty decent stock with a good recoil pad on it for the money.  I've never changed a barrel, but I would recommend that you at least look at the dednutz scope mount/ring combos for the savage line of rifles.  It's a top shelf quailty mount at a very affordable price.

If you wanted a .308 you can just put a .308 barrel on it and be done.  Same bolt face.  Larry

I swapped the 22" 30-06 barrel for a 25" McGowen in 6.5x55 on a Savage and was happy with the outcome.  I found a site that explained how to tune the non accu-trigger and I got mine down to a crisp three pounds.  I just honed the sear. Replaced the long spring on the side with a lighter one (made from a large safety pin) and removed the creep by turning in the set screw on the bottom. I needed the long action so I could load long bullets in the 6.5.  If I was going to make a .308, I would use the model 10 or 11 since they are short actions.    I am watching for a short action donor myself so I can build a .260 next.

The .30-06 is much better cartridge than the .308.  If you want a .308 Tactical, you'd be much better off (dollar wise) just to buy one new.

Custom rifles should be built on quality actions.  Otherwise you end up with a bunch of money in a cheap rifle.

Well Swampman, he already has a quality action, so that part is covered.
