Handi 500 S&W, what's up?
« on: February 15, 2009, 04:46:15 AM »
I've had one of those inexplicable urges to own a 50/70 light weight hunting carbine but can't find any replicas I can afford. Then I realized the .500 S&W is a very similar case and in a singleshot rifle it could be loaded to duplicate the 50/70 or loaded on up if my shoulder agrees, which it probably won't! With a bit of wood work, the handi rifle could be remade to resemble a carbine of the blackpowder era. Anyhow, I checked my wholesale suppliers (I hold an FFL) and none of then have a handi rifle in .500 S&W.
I know there have been a lot of problems with the .500 S&W handi rifles and I'm wondering if H&R just quietly stopped building them? Any thoughts on that? ???

I do not think so as it is cataloged in the 2009 catalog. Possibly its only made occasionally and the current stock is just temporarily deleted.  ??? ???

When Remington closed Gardner and moved to Ilion, their intentions were to limit production to just a few of the more popular chamberings until they got the operation running good and achieved the improvements they wanted to implement, that's why there is a shortage of many offerings and why there were no new offerings for 2009.

Thanks Tim, I guess we all hope the "paring down of offerings" won't be permanent.

Thanks Tim! My usual suppliers are Jerry's Sports, Zanders, Chattanooga, Williams Shooter's Supply, Graf & Sons, Midway, Taylor's & Cimarron. Amoung those I can generally find about anything, in fact Jerry's Sport is good for about 90% of my needs, but no .500 S&W's. I already have a 45/70, just have an itch for a 50/70 aka .500 S&W. ;D

Just saw one at a shop called "The Police Depot' in Rhode Island.  Don't have their # on hand, but that's the only store of that name in RI, so you can likely google it up easy enough.
