Anyone using the JS PM4 caller?
« on: February 07, 2009, 06:52:27 PM »
I've been thinking about purchasing the JS PM4 electronic caller. And I was hoping some of you could give me your opinions of the caller before I made a purchase. A few things I would like to know about are, volume range, battery life, ease of use and transport, and any problems you may have in countered with the caller.
BTW, are there any sound cards for it with the Fox distress sounds on them?

I have a JS acttractor now and is a great little caller, but it lacks volume.
Appreciate any input.
Thanks.

Last week I hunted coyotes a couple of times with a hunting partner with a PM-4.  It defintely brought a lot of stuff in we couldn't see (thick woods in the NW), and a bobcat I could on the first outing (combined with handcalls) and three coyotes I saw come in from 300 yards out along a ridgeline in a clearcut area using just the caller on the second hunt.

I don't have any experience with other callers, as I am new to the sport.  But the PM-4 seemed very loud to me.  The owner says battery life has been very good.  They have at least two pup fox in distress sounds; I read the one with the word "baby" in the title is a real good one for grey fox.  They have bobcat sounds, like bobcat in heat, as well.  Remote range seemed generous.  His PM-4 was in a waterproof box the previous owner had devised, and made transport easy.

I saw a predator huntng vid where they were using the PM4 alot.  It looked like a pretty good unit.  I had the original Preymaster and the sounds were great.  IMO nothing beats Johnny Stewart sounds.  Im sure that the PM4 will be a great caller for you.  Especailly for the price.
It's all a hot mess...........

I have owned several callers, even a couple different fox pro's & I really like the PM-4.. The transmitter & reciever fit nicely inside a old laser 800 padded range finder case.  I pack the case, the speaker (horn) a quiver critter decoy & stake, a padded seat + a pair of bino's in my day pack so it is compact enough to suite me..

The unit is of course remote controlled & IMO has plenty of remote range..
The fox pro's remote will work further away, but I dont see the point in having the call further than 100 yrds myself.. The unit is also plenty loud & clear  at slightly above half volume..

Now the draw backs.!  The things I don't like about the unit is - (1) it wont whisper.!
The volume only goes so low & is still very audiable.. The only answer to this is to hit the stop button & totally eliminate the sound..  (#2 draw back is that its a cheap caller.! Yes it works very well & is plenty loud, but by being cheap, it is the first choice of many callers.! The problem with that is, you are stuck playing the same sounds as other callers in the area.. (#3 drawback - the unit doesn't have a mute.! which really dont bother me, but I have heard others complain about it.  (#4 - not enough Coyote vocalization sounds.. Coywolf barks & howls has put fur on the stretcher, but is getting old to many of the local dogs.! It would be nice to have some female howls & perhaps some challenge howls to add to the mix.. Or better yet, a programable card to add your own sounds.! IMO, that would be the ultimate addition to this caller.
