Is the Calhoun County Sheriff Breaking State Game Laws & Hunting Ethnics?

Fort McClellan is over populated in deer, so there will be a lottery to hunt there to thin the herd. Unfortunately the Calhoun County, AL Sheriff has priced the hunt out of the average hunters league. From what I understand, the drawing of the lottery will be behind closed doors and not open to the public. The entrance fee is $10. If you win a chance after paying the $10 entrance fee and want to hunt, then you will have to pay $200.00 for 2 days of hunting. You cannot follow state law on this hunt as the requirement is that you must kill a doe the first day and then you can kill a buck only on the 2nd day.

To me this is just an attempt at letting some good buddies hunt and the average hunter or young kid just getting started will not be able to pay the fees even if they win a chance at the hunt. Maybe our state conservation Department needs to step in and see what's with this hunt as it doesn't pass the smell test.

If Fort McClellan is truely overpopulated in deer, then why not price it so an average hunter can afford it and follow state game laws on harvesting the deer. One other point is this; how did the Sheriff of Calhoun County manage to control a deer hunt on public property?

This must be the draw hunt a former Anniston resident now out of state asked me about the other day. I had not heard about it.

I honestly don't see what the Sheriff has to do with it or can legally have to do with it. Game is owned by and controlled by the state of Alabama. How I realize the fort property is now owned by the county and several local cities and much but certainly not all has been annexed into Anniston. Still it seems inappropriate for the Amerson to get involved.

I'd sure not pay that price or can to follow their rules. Iffen I were up to the chore I have friends who own land adjoining it and could slip over no doubt except I can't walk that far anymore. Heck I can't even walk a tenth of the way back there to the fort line anymore. Besides with all that hunting going on at the fort his land would be better hunting anyway iffen I could still walk back there.

The best place to hunt is adjoining land.  When a crowd of folks come onto that place making noise and breaking brush, the deer will head out.

I have a small 5 acre parcel that I hunt, that adjoins a 1000 acre hunting lease.  Those old boys come in every morning unloading four wheelers and slamming doors, and the deer head my way.....

Having spouted off, I can't imagine how the sheriff can propose to do this legally.....your tax dollars support the deer herd in many ways every time you buy ammo or licence
