700 SPS Tactical .308
« on: January 16, 2009, 03:28:30 AM »
Just got my new .308 SPS Tactical yesterday.  Would like to go out and shoot it but it's only -5 outside today.  Anybody have one and if so how does it shoot?

Mine shot VERY well but was sensitive to forearm pressure due to flimsy stock

My dad's got one in the police/tactical model with aluminum pillar bedding, custom trigger, and all the bells and whistles. It shoots really well at least out to 550 (that's the farthest I've shot it, at the silhouette range). It's not my personal favorite, but there's no arguing with its accuracy!
You only take one shot at a time, so don't waste it :cb2:

Anytime I've read about those rifles most guys are talking about groups that are 1/2" at 100 using match ammo or handloaded match ammo.  That's a very nice rifle.

I got mine this summer.  I worked up some hands for hunting and the gun will shoot between 1/2" and 1" at 100 yds.  I've no problems with the hogue stock being flimsy although its almost too tacky.  Used it to kill 2 deer so far, but shots were only 50 and 35 yds so not much of a test so far.  Been using 150 sierra spts.  I really like the gun, its heavy short barrel has a great feel to me and it should make shooting offhand easier.

What load did yours like?  I'm using Varget and Win 748 for my other .308.

The load so far is the Sierra 150 spt, varget powder.... 40 something (memory is fading), r-P brass , WLR primers.  If you got a Nolser manual, look under the 150 BT, 308 page.  For the varget powder, it the lowest of the three, most accurate for them.  I think it may be 44 grs, not 100% sure.  I'll check at home and get the exact powder charge and length and let you know.

Finally got to take the SPS to the range today.  All loads tried shot well with the worst being 1.2" at 100 yards.  Best were with 150g Nosler ballistic tips and 150g Hornady SST .6" and .5" five shot groups for them.  Hopefully, I will get back out this week and try some more loads.
