45-70 rechamber questions

If a 45-70 barrel is reamed out to 45-90, 110, or 120, would it be able to shoot shorter rounds, i.e a 45-70 round from a 45-120???

That sounds like a pain in the butt!

My BC is a good shooter and way too new to want to modify.
Maybe I'll just wait until my wife forgets that I bought this one and get another later to ream.
I am, though, completely infatuated with this 45-120 and its legendary performance  :D

Nothing a brush and some #9 won't remove.

Anyting above the .45-90 is a waste of time unless you are using black powder IMO.

I have a .45-90 rechamber and the .45-70's work just fine in it. The trick is to seat the bullets long to take up the extra space (.30").
 I don't think you can get away with this in anything longer...it's not too bad with jacketed, but it can be a pain with cast slugs. The chamber fouling means nothing; clean it as you normally would.

I seriously think there would be damage to the underlug long before the frame showed signs of damage if the shooter is working loads up slowly as Tyler did. The 458 Lott operates at 54kpsi according to A-Square and the case holds less that 100gr water compared to 125gr water for Tyler's 45-120, holding pressures to ~40kpsi the 45-120 can produce Lott velocities in a 32" barrel with less pressure due to the larger case, the lott has a case head of .513" and is 2.8" long, the 45-120 is .506" and 3.25" long. The Lott velocity would be in a shorter barrel too, likely 24".

I keep revisiting the 45-something bigger than 70   every 6 months or so, and keep putting it back on the idea shelf for some reason.  I guess that since I really only shoot 300gr pills and have not yet maxed out the 45-70, I cant bring myself to do this project yet.  For me, I would probably only push the chamber to 45-90.  Now, on another topic, the 445sm has more appeal to me, except why do I need a 45-70 wannabe  :o

Most of the oldtimers here will recall the fella with the 243 Superlight that unknowingly had one of his "friends" load it with a 7.62x39 round and fired it whilst he was he was at the range shooting, needless to say it ruined their day, but it didn't ruin the frame, locked it up so he couldn't open the action, he sent it to H&R, it had ruined the barrel, they replaced the barrel and returned it to him, I suspect they replaced the latch pin also since it's the weak link in the frame. I just ran the figures thru QuickLoad to see what kind of pressure it predicted, I got 126,863psi for those doubting the strength of a modern SB2 frame.  ;)

My fired case capacity is 132 grains BTW.

I bet even with a 24" barrel I could stomp the 458 Lott.  But we won't go there...

And the 500 S&W is a larger case head AND much higher pressure.  If we want to up the ante to 50k in the 45-120 it would be all over most other .458 cartridges.

I will ream the throat out and see how fast I can get the bigger bullets moving at 40k though.

I WILL be 100% safe.  I plan on firing more 720 grain bullets, maybe they will stabilize with a tad more speed.  1800 gps should be pretty easy to achieve with them seated waaaay out as in my picture.

I gotta give you alot of credit.
You seem to do your homework (no school puns intended) when it comes to loading.
Alot of guys your age would just spray and pray without concern for safety and end up blowing something up.
You take your time and calculate things first.
