Hawkeye Compact in 300RCM
« on: July 07, 2009, 04:26:10 AM »
I noticed that Ruger added a compact version of the Hawkeye in 300rcm.
http://www.ruger.com/Firearms/FAProdSpecsView?model=17128

The gun only has a 16.5 inch barrel and a shorter stock. It weights in at 5 3/4 lbs. They also chamber it in .260, 7mm-08, .308 and more. Anyone have experiance shooting any of these? I'd be concerned with a 16.5 inch barrel for accraucy but at 5 3/4 lbs in a 300 mag is appealing as a back country mountain gun.

Experiance, thoughts or opinions....

I suspect it would fit the bill.  Two buddies of mine had M77 carbines w 18" barrels in 30/06.  They were accurate and easy to carry....recoil was another issue.  They shot 180gr bullets and only lost about 100fps due to the short barrels. As I remember, they shot about 1.5" at 100yrds.  I would exppect the .300 to act about the same.

Barrel quality is what matters in accuracy, not barrel length.  Silhouette shooters proved this back in the 1980s with rifle cartridges chambered in 15" barrels shooting well under moa.  Sure you'll get some velocity loss, but it will still beat a .308, etc. in the same barrel length.

Shorter barrel length has nothing to do with accuracy unless iron sights are involved.

Ya might be able to say it but after a few shots with that snub nose barrel and no hearing protection I doubt you'd be able to hear any longer.

I too thought the short barrels would hurt accuracy. My best friend purchased a Ruger Compact in 7mm-08. It turned out to be very accurate. I latter ordered one in 260 Rem and it happens to be one of the most acurrate rifles I own. It has since become my favorite whitetail rifle. Shoots nice little 3/4 inch groups at 100 yards with Remington and Federal ammo. Tried it at 200 yards the last trip to the range. Surprised both of us that the groups were almost just as tight and dropped less than half an inch.

Not sure I would want the RCM in that rifle however. I think a 20 inch barrel would be a better choice.

Have a Ruger SS compact in .308. Got it last year and and used it last season. Great handling gun but the accuracy was a little, or actually very disappointing, honest 3-4 inch groups. Fine for woods range deer hunting but not something I would usually keep. Wasted at least 100 bucks on trying different premium ammo that would improve the horrible accuracy. 3 weeks ago I acraglased the angled receiver area and the tang and free floated the barrel. Also did the tubbs final finish system and it is now a 1-1.25 inch grouping rifle with 150 gr rem coreloks. Would probably do even better with a good trigger but as it is, its fine for hunting. I now love this gun. It is such a great feeling to finally have the gun doing everything I expected of it. Would not have spent all the money on the ammo, final finsih and glassbedding time if I didn't love the way the rifle felt and handled. Its nice to have that black cloud of buyers remorse finally lift. I would highly recomend them, just be prepared to do a little work. Hope it helps.

I have the compact scout model in 300 wsm and love it. mount the scope in the rear position it is accurate as hell, no kick at all to speak of, and not too loud.  Have had it for a year now and have killed 1 moose (100yds), 1 grizz (175yds), 2 black bears (25yds ea), 4 caribou (from 275 to 350yds). I am a 1 gun guy now (just don't tell the wife ;)).  As for my 308 it does lack the accuracy of my 300.
