Traditional Disaster Food
« on: March 06, 2009, 02:09:28 PM »
Just a bit of levity:

Years ago I heard a comedian discussing how, when the power goes out or a big storm is imminent, everyone seems to run to their local grocery store.

"The shelves are stripped bare of milk, eggs and bread. Apparently, French Toast is the ultimate survival food!"

"Disaster food" is anything I try to prepare that's more complex than a cheese sandwich :-\

Well if mamma has Dominoes on the table... well there's been a disaster. I gotta say any good disaster menu must include Saltines, Sardines and Vienna sausages.

Same thing we eat every day.  We have a years supply of Moose, Caribou, Black Bear, Salmon, and Halibut, in the freezer and on shelves.  They get replenished every Spring, Summer, and Fall.  Every year I give 150 to 200 lbs of meat to the local soup kitchen when i clean out the freezer for the fresh stuff.  Some years we throw some Ruffled Grouse in the freezer, if we don't eat them all up first.  In the fall if I shoot Ducks and Geese, we eat them fresh, the rest I also give to the soup kitchen.

I bake my own bread, and flour, meal, and salt are the items we must get at the store.  My wife insist we always have a three months supply on hand, and she rotates her supply as she replaces it.

We live in an area where if there is a volcano, earth quake, snow avalanche on the road or railroad, or another longshoreman's strike in Seattle or Portland, we are screwed for getting supplies.  Safeway, Wal-Mart, and Fred Myers only have a three days supply on the shelves, we can't count on them in an emergency.  Therefore we are always prepared.  Plan for the worst, hope for the best.

What Is A Veteran?
A 'Veteran' -- whether active duty, discharged, retired, or reserve -- is someone who, at one point in his life, wrote a blank check made payable to 'The United States of America,' for an amount of 'up to, and including his life.' That is honor, and there are way too many people in this country today who no longer understand that fact.

Sounds like it Sourdough!

We here are starting to ramp up our food supply and preparation! Dry goods and non refrigerated food storage is taking the place of freezing, although we still freeze, we are practicing food prep and storage that does not require electricity. When I was a kid my dad used to dry shrimp on the roof after boiling them in salt water. I was always amazed that there were never any flies around them(the salt).  We're  boning up on canning skills also! We all have gotten spoiled by the supermarkets availability of fresh food. It will be something that may disappear if things go south so to speak!

another longshoreman's strike...

Don't worry about a strike my friend. I'm a longshoreman, and I'll be glad to come help you out personally, no charge.

What was the address where you've got all that cargo stowed again?
