Let me throw gasoline on this fire.
I am building a new carry gun. It is based on a Colt XSE LW Commander in .38 super.
The grip safety IS going too be pinned.

there is a piece that works better than a pin . gives a higher hold . looks much like a double eagle . no hole in frame . check out Brownells .

i found what it says about the MEU(SOC) 1911a1:

"the m1911 was much liked for it's reliability and lethality, but it's single action required it's users to be thought familiar with it. As a result accidents did happen and orders were given for it to be carried without a round in the camber, bur even so unintentional dischargers were frequent occurrences."

i sum up what it said. If the United States Marine Corps, MEU(SOC) and reconnaissance units (they said there the best of the best)that all carred these guns were haveing problem like that with a gun then i would carry a DA just to be safe.

I know a guy who was a MP during VietNam and he says they were instructed (taught)to carry with one in chamber hammer on half cock position? So, he still does in IPSC matches.
