Favorite 38 special load for handi rifle?
« on: February 03, 2009, 02:24:02 PM »
One of my favorite loads in 38 special is 5 grains of Unique behind a 158 gr. swc cast bullet. Does this load have enough pressure to shoot in a 22 inch barrel or should I bump it up a little? Any body have a favorite load for 38 special in a rifle using 158 grain swc lead bullets? I am looking for a plinking/small game load with minumum recoil.

A .38 Special in a rifle has no noticeable recoil regardless of load. For that matter neither does a .357. Do not shoot light handgun loads in rifles. The last person on here that tried that found out they don't exit the barrel until you knock them out with a rod.

Must be some use for a fullsize rifle in a pistol caliber, (Cowboy Shooting I guess). Seems lots of folks have them these days since the single shot rifles came out. If I had one, I'd run full power loads in it for sure. A bullet lodged in the barrel, is no fun!!
Yeah, I'd for sure load that round up a bit.

NO NO NO not from a rifle. That might not even get to the end of the barrel. Guys you do not want to use light handgun rounds in long barrel rifles. You really need to get the velocity up around 1000 fps to be sure it makes it out the barrel. Sure less will most of the time but you just can't depend on it.

velocity is real consistent  none under 800  few  over 830

never  use gas checks  or jacketed bullets

i  feel  it  is safe  but  be  advised  it  may not be
