Throating a 30/30 Contender barrel
« on: May 25, 2003, 05:13:33 AM »
I bought a 14" 30/30 Contender barrel that had no throat, ansd sent it back without shooting it. I then bought a 23" 30/30 contender barrel, again with no throat. The 311299, 311291 and 31141 cast bullets had bases and gas checks below the neck of the case if the cartridge was to go in the gun.
One of the listmembers offered to lend me a throating reamer, I accepted and received the reamer Saturday, May 24 May, 2003. With absolutely no knowledge I reamed the throat so that all 3 cast bullets may now be seated well out and fit in the gun. It took an hour start to finish.
I did it slowly, with much cleaning of chips and oiling of all parts involved. I watched the origin of the lands move forward as I reamed. Now everything looks good, I'll shoot it on Wednesday.
I don't know why TC can't do the job.
Don't suffer from "reamer anxiety"- it's easy.

Joe,
You have a PM from Graycg.  Looking to see where you got that throating reamer, I need to borrow or rent it if possible.

thanks
