T/C Hawkens in .54 cal for sale
« on: March 14, 2009, 04:21:01 PM »
at local pawn shop. I have every thing I need for .50. Can I buy a barrel with breech plug installed ready to shoot from T/C?

TC will sell you a barrel, but you'd be a fool not to shoot the .54!  The .54 has a great deal of "whompability."

Shoot that .54 with patched balls and you'll be forgetting all about getting a .50 barrel for it.  ;)

The 54 caliber has a 1" across the flats barrel vs. the 45 and 50 caliber barrels with 15/16" barrels. I think you may be able to get a Green Mountain barrel, 50 cal, 1" across the flats.

That's not nessasarily true. the .54 is/was made in both 15/16 and 1"
But, I must agree with the others. Change your gear or aquire the items you need for the .54. You'll love the added performance!

I don't see where you'd need a lot of "gear" in going from .50 to .54, just a different ball size. If you're casting your own balls, then yes you'd need another mold and a cleaning jag but that's a heck of a lot cheaper than a new barrel.
Perhaps T/C did build a .54 with a 15/16" barrel but I sure never heard of one. I think any 15/16's .54 caliber on a T/C would be a replacement barrel not of T/C's making.

I would also just go with that .54 Steve. Patched balls & black of course...a new mold...a new jag.

TC made a 54 in 15/16" very rare , I know of one that belongs to a friend and is in flint .
I think Green MT.made one also as they made barrels for TC .

Buy the 54 and forget about the 50 ! You will love it .

T/C made 50 cal Renegade barrels that are 1 inch wide.  I'd look for a Green Mountain roundball barrel then sell the 54 barrel if you really dont like it.

Look for a .50 T/C Renegade barrel on ebay.  Mine went real cheap yesterday.

The 1" .50 caliber GM barrel weighs a ton, because it's 32" long and has the smaller bore.

A .54 T/C Hawken is worth at least $150.00 more than a .50.
