Help!
« on: February 16, 2009, 06:32:49 AM »
Bought a used Contender about 6 months ago and decided to take the barrel off today. Can't.   Pulling the trigger guard all the way to the rear does not release the barrel. I managed to get the hinge pin out but barrel will still not release. The barrel will actually slide forward a bit but won't rotate. What is wrong, why did it happen, and how do I fix it?

Have you tried pulling the trigger guard with the hinge pen out ?
I had one do the same thing, after getting the hinge pin out it opened when I pulled the guard

Tried that, didn't work. I'll call TC tomorrow, maybe they can walk me through it. I was surprised to find they were closed today because of the Holiday.

Most likely the barrel has a single locking lug on a later model frame that won't release it.  Nothing wrong that a new set of lugs won't fix.  To remove the barrel, remove the trigger guard and use a screwdriver to pull back the locking lug from the underside.  Once it is back far enough the barrel will lift out.

Call T/C and order a two-piece lug.  Drive out the pin and toss out the single lug, replace with two-piece lug, drive the pin back in, install the barrel and go shooting.

Have to agree w/ Lone Star.  Once you get it apart, you can send the barrel to TC and they'll replace the lug free.  Sometime they'll send the part and you can DIY.  Either way- it'll fix the problem.

Best Regards, Ron

Thompson put me on hold and told me to leave a message. They never called back. Used to be a good company. I finally got enough nerve to try the suggested disassembly and after a few false starts actually got the barrel to release. Thanks a lot, guys.
