Older Contender straight wall choke tube for .44mag
« on: January 29, 2009, 04:54:29 AM »
Does anyone have a quick link or source for obtaining one of the wrenches to install or remove the tube that came with some of the 70's model Contenders?
This is just a short thread on section that has straight wall rifling. We think that it was meant for shredding shot capsules just as they leave the barrel? My brother needs this wrench to remove this piece from his long unused Contender. He is interested in shooting it again (after seeing my total .44mag inventory) but that wrench is no where to be found and he does remember having one.
Thanks

Do you mean one of these that engages the rifling to install/remove the choke?  This one is for the Hot-Shot chokes that are added on to the end of the barrel.   A similar one worked with some of the internal chokes and then there was the blade type for the other internal chokes on Contender barrels.

Both the Hot Shot barrels and the vent rib barrels came in 44 (there would be wrenches for 357, 44 and 45).

Exactly! Thanks Ladobe, I almost sent you a pm about this in lieu of this post.

I believe T/C still has those. It's called a combination tool.

The Combo Tool is for the 45/410 barrels, so I doubt it will work on 44MAG and 357MAG shot barrels.

Can the 44 rem mag be shot without the choke installed?  I just picked up a contender with the vent rib - but minus the choke tube.  The wrench is with it though.  Also came with a 14" 30/30 barrel with peep site and muzzle brake.

The .44 mag barrels with the choke were made to shoot without the choke for bullets, and with the choke for Hot Shot capsules.  I haven't seen a hot shot for years, and I would guess the most use one would get now from one of those barrels will be without the choke and using bullets.

That 30-30 will be fun as well.  I have a 12 inch without a brake and love it.

Thanks Keith.  I didn't want to mess up the threads by shooting it without the choke.

I'm anxious to try it out soon.  Looking at the serial number the frame was built in 1980 - the latter part of that year.
