beatin' sticks???
« on: February 05, 2009, 09:59:06 PM »
Okay so we were in conversation at work and the subject of the correct stick to beat rioters with came up.  We went through baseball bats, batons, samjboks etc.  Then I remembered that I had seen some old South African video from before the cultural change that involved a long jointed stick.  If I remember correctly, there were two pieces jointed in the middle about 8 feet long total.  Does anyone know what it would be called?  Now, I'm not planning on buying one but the guys want to know what it looked like and I can't seem to google up anything like "jointed beatin' stick" or "jointed riot control devices" and come up with any thing useful.

Probably a flail.  They were made for thrashing grain.

The Boer name for is is "sjambok". It was made of thick dried and twisted hide, which gave it the jointed look.

hmmm... it could have been the sjambok but I could swear I remember it as being a two piece.  Maybe some type of flail.
