Pro-Hunter Question.
« on: February 10, 2009, 01:23:57 PM »
Guy's I have the opurtunity to buy a used and never fired Pro-hunter. It has walnut stocks and a 7mm Rem Mag barrel. The gun is all stainless for $600. My ? is I want this to hunt deer with in Virginia. Is the 7 mag over kill. Or do I buy the gun and sell the barrel and buy a differ caliber. The owner is not willing to sell w/o barrel and I don't want to miss out on this deal.
Thanks for any help.

So the owner of this rifle purchased walnut stocks for a new Pro Hunter and never fired the rifle ?

I think the 7 MM Mag is overkill.  My brother had one and it spanked him good.  That was before Thompson started putting the flextec recoil reducing stocks on their rifles.  He sold the barrel and bought a 270 Win barrel.  I shoot a 243 Win on my encore.  Both are soft shooting deer killers.  I am looking for a 308 win barrel and will buy it when I find a used barrel I like.  The 50 Cal Black Powder barrels are sweet.  I bet you get one of those right away.  I am also in VA.  I hunt in Bedford Co and Bath County.  Good luck

He bought the pro-hunter frame and walnut stocks and then the 7mag barrel. It was drilled and tapped off center and sent it back to TC and they sent new barrel. He found a differ rifle he wanted and has never had a chance to shoot it.

Is the 7 MAG overkill on whitetail deer?  I have shot a ton of them with that very same cartridge and no it is not, especially if someday you decide to take on larger game.  Out of a Prohunter I don't know what the recoil will be like but every other gun I have owned chambered in that cartridge that were even lighter did not cause me any concern in the recoil department. Sounds like a good deal if that is how he purchased the components.

More power from a cartridge than is needed.

Im new to this forum, but not to shooting.  I have stainless pro hunter .338 win mag and yes, it has more recoil than 30-06, but (to me at least) less than 300 mag.  I have shot small whitetail does and with 225 grain spitzer did less damage to meat than my sons 270, both shot in the shoulder.  The deer shot with the 270 ran about 50 yards and dropped.  The one shot with the 338 went down in its tracks and did not move.  Both were shot at the same distance.  About 125 yds.  I know a lot of you will say the 338 is way too much for whitetail, but in my opinion, it depends on what you are comfortable with.

I live in Franklin county VA. and I haven't had any problems with my 25-06 pro hunter killing deer. It will do all I need to do and more. I don't see the need for those big calibers around here. If you have shot a magnum and didn't mind the recoil then maybe it would suit you but I believe I would try to swap it for a smaller caliber myself.

Are these Pro-hunter's worth the money. I read so many mixed reviews. I really like the appeal of these guns but see they are hard to get to shoot. I like guns the shoot under a 1/2" at 100yards.

I own 2 Encores with 3 barrels and am going to get another one in the next month or so. I am buying it in pieces(just as I did the others). I am buying a SS Encore frame(not Prohunter) and either the Prohunter stock/forearm or the Endeavor stock/forearm sets. I do not need the the swing hammer that the Prohunter offers and this will save some $$$ I would rather spend on my barrel and glass.

Hope that helps
