What is the lightest stock
« on: March 08, 2009, 04:51:33 AM »
I have a handi rifle that has a laminated stock.  I plan on having a synthetic stock.  I'm lookinhg at the Choate stock but also like the synthetic with a cheek.  How does the surviver stock handle and work with a scope.  This is a one gun does everything and when I finish colllecting barrels I'll build a custom case for it.  What is the lightest synthetic stock?  Which stock do you use and why.

I did not like the survivor comb was all wrong. I use the varmit stock for my heavy barrels, the other stocks are oem. Probably gonna leave them that way. Now the forend is where the changes make the look of the rifle. That and the way the stocks are finished. If a light weight all weather is what you are after than go with the syn monte carlo. Myself i think plastic stocks look wrong. They have their uses and i will use them but if looks are what is important nothing will beat wood.

Looks aren't important to me and I don't find these rifles atractive.  The Handi is a utilitarian gun.  That said they have their nitch.  For me it's a gun that can do anything.  I hunt in Pa with my brother every other year and 4 hours north of where I live often.   As a matter of fact the nearest hunting to me is at least 1 1/2 hour away.  I don't often need a second shot and that's at ducks.  With one shot I'll aim a little beter or wave BY-BY  ;)  Right now I have 25-06, 270, 243 std, 243 super light, 20 guage and 410.  The next two barrels are 20 rifled slug and muzzel loader.  I'm thinking of selling the 20 guage and getting one with a vent rib and screw in chokes for more versatility.  Last might be a 35 Whelen if I feel I need a heavier pig gun than 270.  I'll use one stock and change the forend as needed.

The lightest is probrably the Tamer. You can add the Choate cheek piece to any of the Survivor stocks they come in both high and low .I have a low on my Ultra Varmint and a high on one of my Survivor stocks . I have found the Tamer to be pretty lame for anything other than just the short pack guns. Kurt

I think the lightest is the youth synthetic from the 22/410 Combo.  Larry

I,m sure Larry is right about the youth but it's also the shortest.  With the weight bar removed from the standard monte carlo,   I can't imagine a much lighter man sized stock.  Removing the weight bar, however, will make your rifle front heavy.  Something that bothers me about the tupperware monte carlo is that the comb comes comes up to too much of a point,  making recoil more unplesent than it needs to be.  Since it's enexpensive plastic, how hard would it have been to make the mold right the first time ?  Pluss, I have one that kicks off to the left & I'm right handed.  Just venting,  but I hope this helps in your decison.  Jim

Stock weights are in the More Handi Info section, use control F to search the page for weight as stated at the top of the page, you can find any word..... as long as you spell it right.   ;D

Thanks quicktdoo, got it,  the laminateted thumb hole is what I want!  How versitle are they?  I would be using it with a scope and a vent rib shotgun.

Can't help with the illiterate part (which I doubt is the case  ;)), but the google toolbar will help with spell checking.  ;D

I mentioned the spelling since OR-E-Gun Bill recently pointed out that someone  ::) misspelled a word in the FAQs which made the page search miss it.

That should work if you're right handed, some have said that cocking the hammer isn't as easy, but I don't have a problem with it, I suppose if you have small hands it would be an issue tho. They come standard on the USHD.

I finally weighed my light weight gun, .17 FB, as you see it here it is 6.75 pounds, I don't think that with a scope you could get much lighter.  With iron sights I guess it would be about 5.5 pounds.  Larry
