Leading 41 mag
« on: February 06, 2009, 02:00:03 AM »
I cast for a bunch of calibers and the only one I have leaded is my 41 mag.I have a pretty good idea that these .410 molds are about .002" undersized, works ok at 45 colt levels. Why is it that the mold people don't make the correct dia.??

It might be your alloy. Each alloy will drop a bullet at a slightly different diameter. I think most lyman molds are designed for an alloy of 20/1. WWs or any other alloy may drop larger or smaller. Another consideration is the cylinders in your gun. Have you slugged the barrel AND cylinders?  You don't name your gun but many Ruger cylinders are undersized  squeezing the bullet down too small before it even hits the barrel and causing leading.
Just another worthless opinion!!

S&W 57, just appears to me that all molds are .001 to .002" over except the .41 molds ,take a look, all the molds I've looked at say .410 dia. I use ww for all my casting

Slightly harden the WW and the bullets will come up .0001+-  easily//  harden more likely a little more in dia.  -try shooting them with lubing only---- no sizing - all this is no effort to try-- as to the cylinder will the bullets fit, drop through or do you have to push them through- again all this is no effort- btw have you measured these here bullets?-- what mold are you using btw --my curiosity  last thing -- are you shooting them too slow-- so they do not bump up to fit barrel-- of course too fast can be a problem and one more last thing -- -powder sometimes a fairly heavy load of faster powder -like unique and  faster can l cause  leading -- if things fit and too soft is the problem -- make them WDWW-- sorry -- I woke up chatty ;D-- and the molds may indeed be under size - ask around and you can find out how to open them up if you want--me I just change the metal

Its been awhile since I cast any for the 41 so don't have any as cast around, the mold is a lee .410 , 195 swc. I looked and the next size up sizer die is .413 and if all these molds throw .410 bullets the die would't do anygood. If you shoot them around 800-900 fps all is well , problems start at 1200 fps. It's been my experience that ww's are plenty hard. If I do any full house mag load shooting with this gun which I don't very often , I use jacketed bullets. Just seems odd to me that the mold people don't make a .411 or .412 bullet for the .41

I water drop my WW's with just a little tin added. I don't have a Lee mold. My RCBS mold is labeled .410 and the bullets mike .411 unsized. I used to have an NEI mold that dropped the same mix at .413 - the label doesn't always give the actual size, but more the size it aims at. As previously posted, the alloy will dictate actual size in a given mold and you can alter that by adjusting the alloy.

None of my 41's lead at any velocity, not even my rifle.

I agree with Sweetwater , water quench the bullets , I use the same mold with WW's and shoot them in a 657 rechambered to 41GNR , this round is pussing the same bullet to around 1800 FPS with out the first sign of leading .

I shoot as cast and lube with Lee's loquid alox , I put over 600 rounds through this gun before I broke down and cleaned it , wantd to see just what it would take .
