Want to take my boy on a hog hunt
« on: August 31, 2003, 07:25:52 AM »
I live in Virginia which has no hogs and would like to take my 11 year old on a hog hunt. He would use his 243 or my encore 7MM-08. I would like to hunt to but with my bow. Does anyone have a recomendation on a good place in NC-SC-Tenn.-Ky or other close states. I really don't want to go on a "caned" hunt. I know we would be hunting a fenced area but would like to spot and stalk in as close to a wild hunt as possible. Thanks, Don

Try:    http://www.bowsite.com/menu.cfm?State=Virginia
They are bowhunters, but should be able to steer you onto some places to go. Failing that, just do a search for hog hunting links, in states you would be interested in. Can't believe Virginia has no hogs. They have become so widespread! Probably will have them in a few years. Good Luck!>>>>Bug.

Hog hunting in VA

Don,  There is hog hunting in Virginia and it is darn near free.  Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge has a hunt at the beginning of October. It is a lottery hunt, but after Wednesday of hunt week, it is possible to get in as a standby.  They do a standby hunt for unused spots each day, but by Wednesday the crowd has thinned out.  They also hunt the same week at False Cape State Park, which is next door.  Go to www.backbay.fws.gov to see times and rules.  You can apply online, but you have to apply by 4 September.
The part that you may not like is that it is a shotgun and archery hunt, with no rifles allowed.  I have been there and some areas have visibility of hundreds of yards and others, inches.  Using a shotgun has not seemed that much of a limiting factor to me.  I go by the motto that the worst day hunting beats the best day working. :-D
