You are pretty much limited to the .30-40 Krag. Not much else that is suitable for a Contender will clean up a factory .30-30 chamber.  Your .30-30 is not a bad chambering as-is though.

If you were thinking to actually have the barrel rebored to a larger caliber, I'd strongly suggest no.  The cost will be greater than selling what you have and getting what you want.

You might want to trade for a .35 Remington. Used to shoot one in a 14 in. contender and really liked it. If you can find someone who has one locally you might be able to fire a few rounds and see what you think then try to make a swap on the classified forum.

Unless the bore of the 30-30 barrel was no good, I wouldn't go to the expense of having it rebored.  If you are just not happy with the 30-30 barrel, consider selling or trading it for some other caliber.  You could go up to a 35 Remington or a 45-70 if you want something bigger.

I 2nd the 3030 in 14" barrel being a good setup.  I have one with a muzzle brake and for the last 3 years it's been my number 1 deer killer.  I've taken deer out to 200yds with it and they dropped on the spot.  The 3030 round is relatively inexpensive and readily available everywhere; even Murdo South Dakota, so if you're going to travel to hunt; think about the availability of the rounds you'll use.

The 30-30 in the contender is a great cartridge.  Another vote to leave it alone.

If you are bound and determined to change it, you have but a few choices.  30-40 Krag was mentioned before.  You can also go 30-30AI and bump out the shoulder.  You can also go with a 30 (censored word) (kinda krunch the last two words together.)  Uses 308 dies but 307 rimmed brass.  You can shoot 308s in one, but they actually need a different extractor.

All these mods will cost you about $100+ and you gain maybe 200fps advantage.  125 Nosler ballistic tip will give you more fps out of the 30-30 and is great on deer and antelope size game.  No extra charge.

Sell it, Buy a Bullberry sale Barrel. If you elect a 308 it will kick some what I have a Bullberry 15" with a brake. The recoil is really cut down a pleasure to shoot, but you had better cover your ears even while Hunting. Lou

I have some amazing first hand experience  30-30 and 7-30 waters in a contender but I an a handloader freak.  I hear the new Hornaday spungy pointed loads work real well. You might want to try them. Dose anyone on here have experience with them?

The .308 is not an option for the OP in the Contender - it is simply not safe and no reputable gunsmith will chamber it.

I do second the BB sale if you want a different factory caliber.  All my BB barrels are just great shooters.
