480 Ruger Load Data
« on: February 18, 2009, 03:12:02 AM »
Do any of you guys have any good recipes for the 480 Ruger loading the 275 grain Speer Gold Dots.  I have worked up a few going by the manual, and I was really interested in the velocities you are getting with your loads.  I am shooting a SRH 9 1/2".  Thanks

Big bore rounds like the .480 Ruger are NOT about velocity. I see no purpose in using such featherweight bullets in  them. Heck a 275 grain would likely be fatter than it is long. Even the 325s are barely longer than they are wide.

Such bullets are designed to attract folks who don't really understand what big bore handguns are about and what makes them such effective hunting tools. If velocity is your goal then find another round besides the .480 Ruger to exorcise your demons. Use it in the manner it is designed to be used with bullets of 400 or more grains in weight and preferably cast not jacketed. I use 400-430 grain cast bullets almost exclusively in the .480 and 420 is my favorite.
