Need Help Identifying Rifle.
« on: August 30, 2003, 06:09:47 PM »
Need help identifying a .22 rifle.  It is a single shot break top action, with set triggers, octagonal barrel, Monte Carlo stock and has the following markings on the side of the barrel.  JGA (in a circle) followed by 155.  On the side of the receiver it has what looks like proof marks of a crown over a "B" over another crown over a "U".  This same crown/B/crown/U is also under the barrel by the breech.  The area under the breech also has the following stamped on it, "5.3%".  The rifling is very strong also.

Can anyone help with identifying this for me or directing me to when someone can help?

Thanks, Phil

I recal that your barrel markings of a crown over B indicates the royal cypher for King Baudoin of Belgium.

If correct, that would indicate that your rifle is probably some 80 or100 years old.

The Monte carlo type stock is out of place.  The europeans are not big on Monte carco type stocks, and especially not on .22 rimfires.

Thanks John,

The Monte Carlo stock was a mis-statement on my part.  It is correctly called a "cresent cheek piece".  Since posting I have found out this is what appears to be an Anschutz "Rook Rifle", though I am still waiting for someone to verify that.  I e-mailed Anschutz directly with photos and hope they will get back to me with confirmation.

If it is what it appears, then I need to find out the value.  I saw listed recently on GunsAmerican.com a listing for the same rifle in a larger caliber, (Stalking Rilfe), for $850.  Hope this thing is in that range.

Thanks again,

Phil

Congratulations on having a fine rifle!  All of Anschultz's products are first rate!  But, it's GERMAN, not Belgian?

Rook rifles are European designation for something to shoot "rooks" (common small bird) with.

Can you post a picture here?

Let us know how you make out with the final ID.

Thanks John,

I had a guy on another web site advise that his club had a book on the history of all the Anschutz models.  Hopefully he will be able to match it up and let me know.  Here are a couple of photos that might help ID this rifle.

And another.
