the good, the bad, and the ugly pistol question.

Im home sick today, enjoying the best movie ever made ;D, and had a question about the revolvers being used in the movie.  I really dont know much about guns of the west.  The movie is set during the civil war, near the end i believe, so I am assuming its around 1864-'65.  The pistols being used look like Colts, and are cap and ball pistols converted to cartridge.  Were there really cartridge conversions during this time, around '65?  If not, when did the converted cap and ball revolvers become popular?, Thanks fro any info.

I'm thinking 1868 Remingtons were the earliest but I might be wrong.

S&W had the patents to bore a cylinder clean through sowed up until something like 1868 or 69 when their patent ran out and others could legally bore out cylinders.  Colt started making conversions around then and came out with a purpose built cartridge gun in 1871 or 1872.  I believe Remington did about the same.  S&W was making 22 and 32 RF tip up revolvers during the CW.  The only other Metalic cartridge revolver that I know of made during the CW was a French Lafoux 12 mm pin fire revolver.  The Union imported a bunch of them and even issued them during the war.  The pin fire cartridge had a rod sticking out at a right angle to the cartridge head that the hammer hit to set the cartridge off.  It looked nothing like a colt though.
