I want to attempt to fit a .45-70 barrel to my SB2 frame. The rear of the barrel seems to contact the breech properly, but it will not latch up. Where should I start?

You have to remove material from the latch shelf if the breach fits correctly. The place to start is in the FAQs. You'll find step by step fitting info there.
